Through its Museum as Classroom approach, the University of Wyoming Art Museum places art at the center of learning for all ages, supports the academic mission of the University, assists in preparing our future workforce with essential skills, and enhances the cultural life of Wyoming’s citizens and visitors.
The UW Art Museum is excited to showcase a special exhibition featuring works from the collection that have been hand-selected by the museum’s staff. Twenty-three individuals working across departments including curatorial, collections, education, administration, security, and custodial, have each chosen a single work from the museum’s collection of over 11,000 objects to share in this exhibition. Several of these works have never been shown before. Explore this exhibition to see the collection through the eyes of those who work with it most closely. Get to know the staff who do the important work across the museum as each person shares their own unique perspective on a chosen artwork.
To commemorate the University of Wyoming Art Museum’s 50th anniversary since its humble beginnings as a corkboard in the Fine Arts Department, the museum presents an exhibition exploring its place in the American West, a region imbued with the emotional subtexts of freedom, independence, and wilderness. The museum re-presents “traditional” narratives to highlight Indigenous voices, place landscapes in historical perspective, and examine the history of collecting the art of the American West. Using the permanent collection, guest curator Robert Martinez collaborated with Art Museum curators to develop an exhibition that he says, “challenges the visitor to change their mindset and note whose perspective is missing. Whose story is not being told and why.”
Harold Garde at 100: The Unseen Works in Two Acts features 100 never-before-exhibited works by the prolific Harold Garde (American, 1923-2022). This exhibition is nearly 80 years in the making, as Garde’s relationship with the University of Wyoming began in the 1940s. Paintings and works on paper from Maine, New York, and Florida were selected for Harold Garde at 100 to exemplify his distinct vision and the iconographies he returned to across decades. These recurring visuals include chairs, kimonos, puppets, pinnacles, vessels, and many examples of the strappo method developed by Garde. This expansive exhibition invites visitors to experience Garde’s dynamic brushstrokes and singular perspective.
