Configure a Dial-up Connection to the Internet in Macintosh Operating System X (MacOS X 10.0, 10.1.x, 10.2.x)

Introduction

The University of Wyoming (UW) provides students, staff, and faculty with off-campus dial-up Internet access at no cost. This access requires that you have a functioning dial-up modem, a phone connection, and a valid UWYO domain account. For computers that are not UW-owned, Information Technology supports only the UW-specific setup and configuration of the software as presented in this document.

Procedure

NOTE: With MacOS X, you can use the Network System Preference panel to set up your Internet connection. Unlike previous versions of the Macintosh operating system, all the necessary settings are available within this single panel.

1. Configuring the Dial-up Connection

  1. Select the Apple menu in the upper left-hand corner of the screen, and click System Preferences.

  2. In the System Preferences window, in the Internet & Network section, click Network.

  3. In the Network window, in the Show box, select Internal Modem.

  4. Select the TCP/IP tab, and in the Configure box, select Using PPP.

  5. Select the PPP tab, and in the Service Provider box, type UWYO; in the Account Name box, enter your UWYO domain username; in the Password box, enter your UWYO domain password; and in the Telephone Number box, type 7210400 (for faculty and staff) or 7421200 (for students).

NOTE: If you are dialing from the student apartments on campus, you must type a 9 and then the telephone number.

  6. Select the Modem tab, and click the Show modem status in menu bar check box. This will allow you to make a connection directly from the Modem icon (shaped like a phone hand-set) located on the right-hand side of the menu bar.
