Hot topics in beef industry subject of symposium

Beef producers can learn about priority issues facing their industry during the Wyoming Beef Cattle Improvement Association’s state beef symposium March 31 at the Riverton National Guard Armory.

Information will be offered about animal identification, source and age verification, feed byproducts and animal vaccines.

“The symposium will give producers an opportunity to look at some of the hot topics facing the industry,” said Ron Cunningham, Fremont County University of Wyoming Cooperative Extension Service (UW CES) educator who helped plan the meeting.

Jack Whittier, Colorado State University extension cow/calf specialist, will present on animal identification as will David Morris, a senior staff veterinarian with the U.S. Department of Agriculture; John Henn, senior ag marketing specialist with the Wyoming Business Council, will discuss source and age verification; Tim Holt, DVM, and assistant professor in the CSU College of Veterinary Medicine and Biomedical Sciences, will address general use of medicines and vaccines; Steve Paisley, beef cattle specialist with UW CES and assistant professor in the College of Agriculture’s Department of Animal Science, will discuss feeding byproducts; and Cathy Meyer with the Fremont County Cattlemen’s and Women’s organizations will present on cooking beef.

“When I look at the schedule, I don’t see any subjects that wouldn’t be a hot topic,” Cunningham said. “With the recent BSE (bovine spongiform encephalopathy) incident in Alabama, animal ID is back in the forefront. People are wondering how the national animal ID program will affect them.”

He also said Wyoming is moving into verified source programs. “Another really neat program is the general use of medicine and vaccines by Tim Holt,” noted Cunningham. “He does a fantastic job of taking it down to the level that producers enjoying listening to. Steve Paisley will present on feeding byproducts. Every fall we get questions about products and how to work them into the rations.”

WBCIA scholarships will also be presented during the evening banquet. Recipients of the one-time $1,000 scholarships are:

Sammie Jo Redding, daughter of John and Carolyn Redding of Wheatland. She is a sophomore pre-veterinary major in the UW animal and veterinary science program. She hopes to be accepted into a veterinary program and remain in Wyoming as a veterinarian.

Kendra Simms, daughter of Scott and April Simms of McFadden. She is a freshman at the Logan College of Chiropractic in Chesterfield, Mich. She hopes to return to the Laramie/McFadden area, remain involved in the family ranch, and provide chiropractic expertise for the ranching community.

Annie Collins, daughter of Rusty and Kim Collins of Lander. She is a sophomore at Northeastern Junior College, Sterling, Colo., and hopes to obtain a teaching degree by continuing on to UW and become a high school vocational agriculture and FFA instructor.

Jarred Bower, son of Keith and Lisa Bower of Worland. He is a sophomore at Sheridan College, Sheridan. He hopes to continue his education at UW and earn a master’s degree in agriculture education and also work as an FFA adviser.

There is a $10 fee for registration, which starts at 8:30 a.m. with a 9 a.m. welcome and workshops starting at 9:30 a.m. There is a $15 fee for the evening banquet. Cunningham said producers can attend the symposium at any time.
