Brucellosis rules, feeding by-products part of Wyoming Beef Symposium in Riverton

            An overview of the emergency brucellosis rules, integrating by-products into a feeding program, and rural development programs are part of the Wyoming Beef Symposium Friday, April 6, at the Holiday Inn in Riverton.

            The symposium is sponsored by the Wyoming Beef Cattle Improvement Association (WBCIA), and is open to everyone. Attendees do not have to be members of WBCIA. The symposium concludes with a banquet and presentation of numerous WBCIA awards.

            Registration is $10 and includes lunch. There is a $20 banquet fee. Attendees can register the day of the event.

            The program includes:

10-11 a.m. – “The People and Programs Available to You Through Wyoming Rural Development.” Del Tinsley, state director, Milt Geiger,  rural development specialist, and Jerry Tamlin, business programs and area director, all of the U.S. Department of Agriculture Rural Development of Wyoming.

11 a.m. – Cattle-Fax presentation. Cattle-Fax is an Englewood, Colo., member-based organization that provides timely information to cattle producers.

Noon – Lunch, Northern Ag Network, Russell Nemetz, ag director; Steer-A-Year Program, Don Julian, assistant athletic director for annual giving, Cowboy Joe Club; NILE Heifer Program, Justin Mills, general manager, Northern International Livestock Exposition.

1:30-2:30 – “Ag Issues,” presented by the Shoshone, Casper and Worland FFA chapters

3-3:30 p.m. – “Overview of WSLB Chapter 2 Brucellosis Rules and Your Options.” Jim Logan, former Wyoming state veterinarian, and Tim O’Neal, brucellosis technician, Wyoming State Livestock Board.

3:30-4 p.m. – “Integrating By-Products into Your Feeding Program.” Panel discussion, Jack Settlemire, Wyoming territory manager, Ranch-Way Feeds, Professor Steve Paisley, University of Wyoming extension beef specialist, Shawn Booth, pure-bred producer from Goshen County, Hugh Pelts, manager, True Ranches, LLC, Wheatland.

7 p.m. – Banquet, entertainment, presentation of $1,000 scholarships and presentation of WBCIA awards

            The WBCIA was formed in 1984 by a group of beef cattle producers and the UW Cooperative Extension Service to improve beef cattle, provide education, encourage development of marketing schemes based on genetic merit and work with other associates to promote beef cattle improvement and the industry.
