UW sponsors annual classic livestock show June 23-24 in Laramie
Workshops and livestock competition are part of the 10th annual University of Wyoming Cowboy Youth Classic June 23-24 in Laramie.
The event, sponsored by the College of Agriculture’s Department of Animal Science, is at the Cliff and Martha Hansen Livestock Teaching Arena two miles west of Laramie on Highway 230.
Youths with beef cattle, sheep and swine projects can participate. Last year’s event drew 81 competitors from Wyoming and Colorado. Exhibited were 40 head of beef, 61 head of market hogs and 26 market lambs.
“The Cowboy Youth Classic is an educational event for youth with livestock projects,” said Lance Miller, UW Livestock Judging Team coach and an organizer for the event. “The youth will increase their knowledge in the care and management of their animals, livestock and meats judging, and fitting and showing techniques.”
Youths of any age can participate, and there are three divisions for showmanship, said Miller. The novice division is for youths exhibiting the first year. The junior division is for youths ages 13 and younger. The senior division is for those 14 and older.
Exhibitors will weigh in projects Friday morning with fitting and showing clinics starting at 11 a.m. All participants are required to attend their choice of two workshops from 2-4 p.m. Workshop options are livestock selection and judging, meat laboratory tour, farm and ranch safety, food safety, livestock judging reasons and meat judging.
A complimentary meal will be served at 6 p.m. Optional quiz bowl and livestock judging contests start at 7 p.m.
The livestock show starts at 10 a.m. Saturday beginning with market lambs, then market hogs and beef cattle.
