College ag students invited to Oct. 10 competition at UW
Undergraduate agriculture students attending the University of Wyoming or a community college in the state are invited to talk their way toward $350 in prizes.
The Wyoming Farm Bureau Federation’s (WyFB) Young Farmer & Rancher Committee (YF&R) is hosting the third annual Collegiate Discussion Meet Oct. 10 in the UW College of Agriculture.
“This competition is designed to simulate a committee meeting where discussion and active participation are expected from each committee member,” said Kerin Clark, WyFB media director. “Contestants are given pre-determined topics, which will be discussed. Contestants will also give opening and closing statements and are judged on their knowledge, ability to participate in a committee meeting and listen to others and air all points of view.”
Contestants will participate in a preliminary round with the top four advancing to the final round. Contestant orientation begins at 3:30 p.m. The meet starts at 4 p.m. in the Ag Auditorium and spectators are welcome.
The winner will receive $300 in cash and a $50 gift certificate at the UW Bookstore and also be eligible to compete in the American Farm Bureau Federation’s YF&R Collegiate Discussion Meet Feb. 10-12 in Jacksonville, Fla. Sponsorship of travel expenses is pending.
The runner-up will receive $150 cash. Third- and fourth-place finishers will receive a $25 beef gift certificate.
“We have been excited to see growth in the number of competitors each year,” says Darla Rhodes, WyFB YF&R competitive events chair. “We feel this is a great opportunity for college students to put their knowledge into a competition and also show them the opportunities available through Wyoming Farm Bureau’s YF&R program.”
