UW Pig and Lamb Sale April 22
Nearly 100 pigs and 15 lambs will be auctioned Saturday, April 22, at the annual University of Wyoming Pig and Lamb Sale.
The event, coordinated by the UW College of Agriculture’s Department of Animal Science, begins at 2 p.m. at the Cliff and Martha Hansen Livestock Teaching Arena two miles southwest of Laramie on Highway 230.
Livestock will be available for viewing at 10 a.m., and a free lunch will be served at 12:30.
“The pigs and lambs will become 4-H and FFA projects that will be shown at county and state fairs this summer,” said Lance Miller, livestock coach for the Department of Animal Science. 4-H is the youth arm of the UW Cooperative Extension Service, and its state offices are in the College of Agriculture.
There will be approximately 80 to 100 head of Hampshire, Duroc, Yorkshire and crossbred pigs and between 12 and 15 Suffolk, Hampshire and crossbred market lambs, Miller said.
“The majority of the proceeds from the sale of animals goes to support the College of Agriculture’s teaching and research programs,” Miller noted.
“A small portion of the income goes to the UW judging teams (wool, meats and livestock) in exchange for providing physical labor, preparing the animals for the sale and work involved on the day of the sale. This fund raiser, in turn, is used by the judging teams to help pay for travel expenses associated with attending contests,” he said.
The Feed Store in Laramie is donating a pig to be given away. Buyers will receive a free bag of feed with every purchase of a pig. The feed is donated by The Feed Store and Ranch-Way Feeds in Laramie.
