Irrigated crops focus of Aug. 4 field day at SAREC

Irrigated research will be the focus of a field day Friday, Aug. 4, at the University of Wyoming’s Sustainable Agriculture Research and Extension Center (SAREC) near Lingle.

Tours start at 3 p.m. “We will have research on corn, beans, sugar beets, potatoes and possibly some results to share on the biofuel and oilseed research we are conducting right now,” said Jim Freeburn, SAREC director.

An update on construction will also be given, said Freeburn. “We are in the planning phase of the work to add on a state-of-the-art wet lab and a visiting researcher and graduate student housing facility,” he said.

A barbecue, starting after 5 p.m., will follow the tours.

Dedication ceremonies for SAREC are Thursday, Sept. 7. Event details are still being finalized.

SAREC has 1,522 acres of dry land cropland, 349 acres of irrigated cropland, 1,880 acres of rangeland, 19 acres of irrigated organic cropland and 40 acres of dry land organic cropland.

Several facilities have been added this past year. A 5,700-plus square-foot building is the cornerstone of the facilities and includes 10 offices, a research preparation room and a seed laboratory.

Also built were a livestock research building, a shop, a hazardous materials facility and a feedlot.
