UW names research and extension center near Lingle for Jim Hageman
The University of Wyoming named its newest agricultural research center the James C. Hageman Sustainable Agriculture Research and Extension Center (SAREC) in honor of the late UW alumnus and state representative of Fort Laramie.
Hageman died in August, shortly before the facility near Lingle was dedicated.
The announcement, by UW President Tom Buchanan Monday at the Wyoming Stock Growers Association and Wyoming Wool Growers Association meeting in Casper, was met by applause.
The UW Board of Trustees approved the naming at its October meeting.
"The trustees' decision to name SAREC in memory of Jim Hageman was unanimous," said Buchanan, "but we wanted to announce the naming at the most appropriate time. It is fitting we do so here, now, among his many friends in Wyoming's agriculture community. Jim's contributions to UW and Wyoming farming and ranching will forever be enshrined at this outstanding research facility."
Many Hageman family members live in the Lingle-Fort Laramie area.
The family is very honored by the University of Wyoming decision to name SAREC after Jim, said his wife, Marion Hageman. Its obviously wonderful to have it within the same community he lived and spent so much time and effort.
Hageman believed in the future of Wyoming and its young people, said Buchanan. He believed he had a responsibility to both. That was evident in the way he lived his life, both personally and as a public servant.
During the August dedication, Buchanan called Hageman a true son of Wyoming. Hageman was a lifelong rancher, vitally involved in the UW College of Agriculture and the UW Helga Otto Haub School of Environment and Natural Resources, noted Buchanan, and his voice was prominent in legislation supporting SAREC.
He was dedicated to the state's tradition of agriculture, education and service, Buchanan said Monday. Hell be missed, but today we will ensure he will not be forgotten.
SAREC is part of the Wyoming Agricultural Experiment Station, which also has research and extension centers in Sheridan, Powell, and Laramie.
SAREC is one more example of UWs commitment to the fundamental farming and ranching industry in Wyoming, said Buchanan.
SAREC comprises 1,522 acres of dry land cropland, 349 acres of irrigated cropland, 1,880 acres of rangeland, 19 acres of irrigated organic cropland, 40 acres of dry land organic cropland, a feedlot and a livestock research laboratory. A dormitory for researchers and a wet lab are planned additions. The dry land, irrigated land and livestock systems in one location will allow insights into how best to use resources.
