Family Day Scheduled Saturday at UW Art Museum | |
July 12, 2007 -- Families and individuals will celebrate art, learn about other cultures, eat enchiladas and create their own masterpieces during Family Day Saturday, July 14, from 11 a.m.-4 p.m. at the University of Wyoming Art Museum.
Museum visitors can explore all of the exhibits in the galleries, and docents will be available to discuss the artwork and answer questions. Family Day activities will focus on the exhibition, "Pinturas de Fe: the Retablo Tradition in Mexico and New Mexico."
"Pinturas de Fe" or "Paintings of Faith" are a popular Hispanic religious art tradition that began in Mexico and the American Southwest in the 18th century and flourished there throughout the 19th century. Retablos, painted on canvas and wood then on copper plates, celebrate devotion to Jesus, Mary, the Archangels, a variety of sacred shrines, and most commonly, the numerous saints of the Catholic faith.
Jerry Vigil, artist in residence, will assist families as they create their own retablos in the studio on Family Day. Art historian Jose Esquibel will discuss "The Art of Saintmaking" from 11 a.m.-noon in the Stock Growers Room. St. Laurence School enchiladas will be available.
The UW Art Museum is located in the Centennial Complex at 22nd and Willett Drive. The museum is open Monday through Saturday 10 a.m.-5 p.m. and Sunday 1-5 p.m. Admission is free. For more information call (307) 766-6622 or visit www.uwyo.edu/artmuseum.
