    2022 Distinguished Service Award

    David L. Whitman

    Ph.D., P.E., F.ASEE

    David "Dave" Whitman is from Cheyenne, WY. He received the B.S. degree (1975) in Electrical Engineering and the Ph.D. degree (1978) in Mineral Engineering from the University of Wyoming. He worked in the synthetic fuels arena prior to becoming a faculty member in Petroleum Engineering at the University of Wyoming in 1981. From 1989 to 2005, he was the Associate Dean of Academics and from 2005 to 2016 was a professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering. He held the position of H.T. Person Professor from 2013 to 2016. He retired in May 2016 as an emeritus faculty member. Since retiring, he has stayed active with UW and the College in a variety of ways including helping to judge Senior Design projects, working on the EERB Steering Committee, and performing an academic review for the School of Energy Resources.

    He received UW's Ellbogen Outstanding Teacher Award in 1985, the College of Engineering’s Tau Beta Pi Outstanding Undergraduate Teaching Award in 1990 and 2004 and Tau Beta Pi’s Wyoming Eminent Engineer Award in 2009. In 2000, he received one of 10 National Outstanding First-Year Student Advocate Awards presented by the National Resource Center for the First-Year Experience. In 2001, he received the ASEE Rocky Mountain Section Outstanding Teaching Award and the University of Wyoming’s Each Student A Person Award from the Associated Parents of the University of Wyoming.

    The Sigma Phi Epsilon fraternity selected him to be their advisor from 2010 through 2016. He was also initiated as a Renaissance Brother in that fraternity in 2014.

    Dave was a gubernatorial appointment to the Wyoming State Board of Registration for Professional Engineers and Professional Land Surveyors for 15 years from 2001-2016. He was elected as Board President from 2007-2013.  He is currently a Past President of the National Council of Examiners for Engineers and Surveyors (NCEES) and was awarded both the NCEES Western Zone Distinguished Service Award and the NCEES National Distinguished Service Award in 2012. He is still an active member of the American Society for Engineering Education (ASEE) having presented papers at their annual conference nearly each year since 1983.  ASEE recognized him as a Fellow in 2013. He is also a National Past President of the Mortar Board Senior Honor Society as well as an advisor of the UW Chapter from 1993-2016. From 2012-2018, he was the NCEES representative to the ABET Board of Delegates, has been a member of several of ABET’s standing committees, and, for the past four years, has been the ABET Treasurer on its Board of Directors. He remains active in the Wyoming Engineering and Surveying Society where he is a Past President and was the recipient of the President’s Outstanding Engineer Award in 2012.
