Asbestos Awareness Training

The purpose of the training is help educate students in the history of asbestos, regulations governing asbestos, location of asbestos containing materials (ACM) in buildings, recognition of ACM damage, health effects of asbestos, and University procedures regarding asbestos.

All students will be required to be present for the entire class and at the end there will be a 20 question test that is multiple choice.  Students must obtain a 80% or higher to pass the course.  Certificates for the course will be emailed to student upon successful completion of the course.

This course will be offered quarterly by the Environmental, Health and Safety department. Contact Carol Petty, Industrial Hygiene/Safety Specialist at 766-3385 or cpetty1@uwyo.edu.

Back Injury Protection

Learn to anticipate and identify conditions that result in injuries.  Covers OSHA's revised Work Practices for Manual Lifting, which has a revised lifting equation giving better precision for determining the risk for overexertion injuries.

Scheduled as needed.  If interested, call 766-3385.

Bloodborne Pathogens

Employees at risk of bloodborne pathogen exposure execute tasks involving exposure to human blood and other potentially infectious materials. It is not the number of times they have occupational exposure, or how big the exposure is, but whether or not there is ever an exposure required by the job description.

Annual review (refresher training) is required.

Sessions will be conducted from 8:30 - 9:30 AM in Knight Hall Room 74.

For more information or to schedule a special training session contact Madeline Dalrymple, Biological Safety Specialist at 766-2723 or dalrympl@uwyo.edu.

Chemical Hygiene (Lab Safety, included as part of SOLS training)

Required for all faculty, staff and students working in laboratories. Overview of the University program covering chemical safety in the laboratory; general chemical safety, responsibilities, and liabilities are covered.  Attendance required for all personnel who work in laboratories that use chemicals (90 minutes).

Normally scheduled the week before the semester begins and twice after semester is in session.  If interested, call 766-2649 or e-mail Chemical Safety Specialist (jbenedik@uwyo.edu).

D.O.T. Hazardous Material (HazMat) Shipping

Required by federal and state regulations, and UW policy, for all hazmat employees. By DOT regulation, you are a hazmat employee if you ship, transport, load, unload, or store hazardous materials incident to transport, or supervise personnel who do any of these things. Hazardous materials are typically any liquid or solid that is explosive, pressurized in cylinders, flammable, reactive, oxidizing (evolves oxygen upon decomposition), toxic, infectious, radioactive, corrosive, or noxious. For example this training is required for the following UW personnel (and others), if they are hazmat employees, as described above:

  • Chemical Stockroom personnel (Physical Sciences Bldg.)
  • Faculty, Graduate Students, and Lab personnel who package, ship, or transport hazmat for research
  • Physical Plant Stores personnel
  • Regulated Materials Management Center personnel
  • Shipping & Receiving personnel

Personal fines and imprisonment can be applied for handling or transporting hazardous materials without this training. Training must be repeated every three years. Course handouts are available in advance for those who wish to prepare and focus on specific topics during the class. You can find these materials on the EHS web site for hazmat shipping. For more information contact the Regulated Materials Management Center at 766-3696.

Scheduled as needed.

Ergonomics

This is an opportunity to apply ergonomic principles to ensure employee health, safety, and productivity.  Covers all aspects of the work environment, including work station improvements, eye strain from VDT's, and carpal tunnel syndrome.

Scheduled as needed.  If interested, call 766-3385 or e-mail dstgebrg@uwyo.edu.
