Oct. 9, 2003 -- A group of approximately 60 University of Wyoming students has formed a women's soccer fan club that has helped increase attendance at home Cowgirls' matches.

The HERD, a visible cheering section at all home soccer matches, will be on hand to support the UW Cowgirls when they open Mountain West Conference action against UNLV Friday, Oct. 10, at 3 p.m. The Cowgirls host San Diego State University at 1 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 12.

Since the group was organized last spring, attendance at home soccer games has increased nearly 30 percent, says HERD president Alan Yates, an architectural engineering senior from West Jordan, Utah.

The HERD is the brainchild of members of the UW Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity in partnership with UW athletics marketing and the financial support of Pepsi, The Fine Edge and The Brown and Gold Outlet.

UW women's coach Anne Moore has endorsed the fan club's support, Yates says, and among the HERD's members are UW President Philip Dubois and Gov. Dave Freudenthal.

HERD members will accept membership signups at all home soccer matches this fall. The $7 fee for students and $10 for others includes a long sleeve T-shirt, front row seats at all UW Cowgirl soccer games and other items.
