WHAT IS LPAC?

ABOUT US:

The Laramie Progressive Action Collective (LPAC) is a recognized student organization on the University of Wyoming campus.  LPAC was founded in the fall of 2002 largely because no recognized student organization on the University of Wyoming campus that we had contacted was willing to sponsor an information table for us in the breezeway of the Wyoming Union on campus in order for us to campaign to pass a student government resolution calling for the repeal of the 1998 Higher Education Act drug provision that denies federal higher education financial aid to students with drug convictions (mostly those with first-time minor marijuana offenses).  It was in the interest of having such a table connected with this campaign that LPAC was founded.  While we failed in the fall of 2002 to pass this student government resolution, it passed in the spring of 2004 by a vote of 20 to 6!

Essentially, we have two major orientations:  advocating harms reductions policies and facilitating a dialogue regarding drug policy on campus (we believe that there is a very rational and reasonable case for drug policy reform), and progressive politics (projects in these spheres are kept distinct from each other).

Most of LPAC’s members position themselves on the political left.  We are committed to providing access to information to UW students and promoting political discourse, inquiry, and thought.  Essentially, LPAC’s mission is educational.  We hope to expose the campus community to as many forums, film series, lectures, etc., as possible to open up dialogue and spur thought.

Simply said, LPAC is a proudly liberal student organization on campus that welcomes and truly appreciates diversity in thought (we operate democratically and non-hierarchically and operate from the bottom up instead of top down).  We pursue whatever course its members desire after rigorous discussion, providing that its human and financial resources are capable of bearing it.

MEETING LOCATIONS AND TIMES:

During the fall semester of 2004, by default, we’ll meet at our table in the Union breezeway from 12 PM—1 PM because there is a lot of work involved in executing this film series.  Usually, though, we suspend regular physical meetings and conduct business on-line on our progressiveplanning list serve (see below) because we don’t want to exclude anyone as is incumbent upon setting any arbitrary meeting time (even if it is selected democratically).  So, please subscribe to the progressiveplanning list serve if you’re interested in getting involved...

LIST SERVES:

We maintain four different e-mail lists to provide options to subscribers:

1. Progressiveannouncements (newsletter///infrequent postings).  The first list that is recommended is LPAC's announcement list serve address.  It is an announcement-only newsletter list serve where you can stay updated regarding LPAC's activities (with updates to activities that are subject to change, our website, etc.) related to both of our major orientations (drug policy and progressive activism).  As such, subscribers rarely hear from us except for important special announcements on this list.  Subscribe by sending a blank e-mail to:  progressiveannouncements-subscribe@yahoogroups.com

2. Progressiveplanning (volunteering-business-discussion///occasional to moderate postings).  Our second is our progressiveplanning list serve where all discussion and business relating to our activities takes place.  This is where all requests for help and all discussion on-line will appear, and you can voice your ideas, feedback, input, etc…  If you want to lend a hand (***it is sorely needed***), this is the list.  Subscribe by sending a blank e-mail to:  progressiveplanning-subscribe@yahoogroups.com

3. Nostrugglenoprogress (action alerts, political humor, political resources, news, editorials, LPAC announcements, etc.///daily messages) .  The third and oldest is our nostrugglenoprogress list serve, our main list serve, where requests for help, tasks, all announcements regarding both of our orientations, and daily forwards appear.  It is a high volume/frequency list serve with many action alerts, editorials, news items, etc., (forwards in general).  Upon subscribing, you receive a welcome message advising you in regards to how you can configure your account for daily digests of all of the day’s posts only (to receive a single message daily instead of individual posts), or you can opt to receive special announcements only (so that you only receive notifications of meetings, events, etc.) using those instructions.  Subscribe by sending a blank e-mail to:  nostrugglenoprogress-subscribe@yahoogroups.com

4. Wystudentsforsensibledrugpolicy (drug policy project list serve///weekly messages [more frequent when planning and executing activities]).  The fourth is our wystudentsforsensibledrugpolicy list serve.  This is the list serve for our drug policy project.  You can expect to receive occasional action alerts and weekly drug news digests from DPA and DRCNET, and more frequent messages when we are pursuing activities.  We kept this one separate because there are many conservatives and libertarians who support drug policy reform who were offended by our secondary orientation (progressive politics).  You can expect a moderate level of postings and forwards on this list, and much less than our third list serve listed above.  Likewise, you can configure your subscription for a daily digest or special announcements only using the instructions contained in the welcome message.  Subscribe by sending a blank e-mail to:  wystudentsforsensibledrugpolicy-subscribe@yahoogroups.com

We recommend that people subscribe to all four (and at least progressive planning and progressive announcements) so that they can get a taste for LPAC and what LPAC is about, recommending the daily digest mode for all the high volume e-mail lists and individual messages for the lower volume lists.

Most subscribers choose daily digests for the higher frequency lists and skim them for items that interest them.  But if you prefer, you can easily unsubscribe or set your subscription to special announcements only using the instructions contained in the welcome message for all of these lists.
