Ian Adams' Experience

Capstone Practicum

Albany County Public Health.

I had a great experience at Public Health. I was able to participate in immunizations, HIV case management, public education, maternal-child health, sexually transmitted infection testing and contact investigation, and long-term care assessments. I was surprised at the broad range of services offered by Public Health and the absolute willingness they had to allow me to participate. Some very experienced and passionate nurses staff Public Health, and it was a real pleasure to learn from them. While not a traditional skills-based clinical experience, my education was definitely enhanced by my time in Public Health.

Premier Bone & Joint.

I completed my clinical experience at Premier Bone and Joint in Laramie. I was able to fully participate in pre-, peri- and post-operative tasks. In pre-op I assisted in preparing the patients for their surgeries by establishing IV’s, administering pre-operative medications, and educating the patient. In the operating room I was able to assist with delivering conscious sedation medications and observe several interesting procedures. I spent most of my time in the post anesthesia recovery unit (PACU), assisting with patients recovering from general anesthesia. I was able to develop my assessment skills, interact with the patients and their families, and assist in a successful recovery from the operating room.

Overall.

My clinical experiences were highly educational because of the quality of the preceptors available to me. I not only had extremely competent preceptors, but, in turn, they were able to place me with other nurses that had both great experiences and excellent teaching abilities.

Being a non-traditional student.

I am a non-traditional student returning for my second degree. I could have chosen to do the BRAND [accelerated] program, but I have young children and needed my clinical experiences to be in or near Laramie. In every case, the nursing program ensured that I was able to balance the conflicting needs of my family with my clinical education. I am grateful for the recognition, support and effort of the school of nursing in accommodating my family and me.
