I was placed in the Nursery/Level II NICU at Cheyenne Regional Medical Center. I absolutely loved it. I am passionate about babies, and being inside this specialized unit made me realize that this is exactly what I want to do. I learned so much ranging from normal births to assisting with neonatal resuscitations. I got to practice IV’s, catheters, blood draws, NG tubes, suctioning, administering medications, baths, etc. all on newborns. My nurse was specialized in lactation, so I learned a lot more than I ever thought possible on that as well, which is great!
One of the most rewarding experiences was helping my nurse be the primary care giver and resuscitating while stopping seizures of a 3-day-old baby. Reassuring the family and helping them start their new life was a big rewarding factor too. My favorite part was working alongside the incredible nurses that allowed me to grow and learn with them. Working in a place where people loved going to work every day changes the entire environment and makes it fun.
The practicum is the absolute best part of the program. It really puts together everything that you learn in the classroom and allows you much more independence to practice. I feel so lucky to have been placed somewhere that allowed me to continue learning what I love. I could not have asked for a better experience at CRMC.
