A poster presentation by Jennifer Petrie during the American Pharmacists Association (APhA) Annual Meeting and Exposition held March 16-20, 2007 in Atlanta, Georgia discussed care and services provided to patients at the Laramie Downtown Clinic.  The poster was one of three presented by UW School of Pharmacy faculty.

"Implementation of Appointment-Based Lab Services in a Free Clinic", authored by Jennifer L. Petrie, Pharm.D., clinical assistant professor of pharmacy practice, Mary E. Burman, Ph.D., R.N., F.N.P., B.C., professor, UW College of Health Sciences School of Nursing, and Letha K. Buller, R.N., Laramie Downtown Clinic.

The purpose of the lab clinic is to provide pharmaceutical care and clinical pharmacy services for established patients receiving care via the Downtown Clinic. These services include direct patient and medication management; drug information consultation; and diabetes, hyperlipidemia, hepatic function, and anticoagulant therapy management through CLIA-waived point-of-care device monitoring. Six 20-minute appointments are scheduled during the two-hour lab clinic each week. The lab tests include glycosylated hemoglobin, serum lipid levels, liver function tests, and international normalized ratios. Pharmacy students in their second and fourth professional years receive training and participate in the lab clinic. Through the implementation of the lab clinic, directs costs have been reduced by almost 50%. It provides an educational setting for pharmacy students to provide direct patient care, and allows the pharmacist to educate the patient immediately, thereby potentially improving patient outcomes.
