Dr. Schatz joined the Division of Social Work in July of 2006. She had been a guest instructor for several summers before this permanent appointment. Upon arriving at UW, Dr. Schatz initiated the Wyoming Education and Social Research Institute, WyoE Family Institute for short. More information on the projects fostered thru the Institute can be found on the Division web page.

 

 Dr. Schatz has worked with children, aging adults, and families since 1972 in Colorado, Pennsylvania, Missouri, and returning to Colorado in 1985. She has an extensive background in practice and training of professionals who are involved with children and families and human services work. She has presented in over two dozen countries, particularly in Eastern Europe and Russia. She has spent many years teaching and working with non-profit agencies and has been a consultant to local, regional and national family and youth development organizations. She has also served as a consultant in the area of advanced generalist social work education with various schools of social work in the United States.

 

 

 

She has articles published in journals such as The Journal of Social Work Education, The International Social Work Journal, Child Welfare, Mental Retardation, Hospice, The New Social Worker, Journal of Baccalaureate Social Work, and the Journal of Police Crisis Negotiations along with news articles, monographs and several dozen original training manuals and accompanying video materials addressing the knowledge and skills to foster effective social work/human services practice and parenting.

 

Previously, she served for 21 years at Colorado State University. She was a Professor at CSU in the School of Social Work and in the School of Education (doctoral program faculty). She was also the Founder, and, Director, of the Education and Research Institute for Fostering Families, (ERIFF) at Colorado State University. Dr. Schatz also served as the coordinator for a new on-line graduate certificate program for Youth Development, a collaborative educational program of the Great Plains Interactive Distance Education Alliance (Great Plains IDEA). She has served as CSU's Coordinator for the Nonprofit Youth Development Certificate program, formerly the Youth Development Interdisciplinary Certificate Program.

 

 

Research Interests:
Research interests include social policies and programs including public programs that include family programs, child welfare, child protection, child mental health, juvenile justice, adoption, and community based youth development; adults and aging adults research; qualitative and community action research approaches; grief and hospice; generalist and advanced generalist research; international social development, social welfare, and social programs; colonialization and social civility.
