One of Diane's primary interests (both for research and practice) is trauma-related issues, both at the micro (such as PTSD in individuals) and macro level (such as cultural trauma or ethnic cleansing). Her clinical experience began with working with Holocaust survivors and their children in a Jewish hospital in New York City. Since then she has had extensive experience in working with women who have been raped or molested in childhood.

Diane's dissertation topic was on the use of intentional touch with women whose children had died, and she is pursuing a follow-up to that study to examine the impact of a child's death on significant relationships.

Prior to entering the academic arena, Diane worked for many years in the mental health field with a specialty in marriage and family therapy. Presently, she teaches Human Behavior in the Social Environment as well as Advanced Practice with Families. Diane also has a graduate certificate in Women's Studies and teaches cross-listed courses for Women's Studies and Social Work.

Research Interests:
Diane's primary research interests are in the areas of trauma and grief, death and dying, and the use of alternative interventions with these same groups of people. She is presently conducting a seven-year follow-up study with mothers whose children have died. She has also recently submitted a grant application to National Institute of Health to conduct a study on teaching caregivers of dying persons how to provide massage for their dying loved ones. Diane received grant funding from Massage Therapy Foundation in September, 2005 to conduct a similar feasibility study with hospice recipients and their caregivers.
