UW Theatre and Dance to Present "Collected Dances, Part II"

Feb. 21, 2006 -- The University of Wyoming Department of Theatre and Dance will present its final dance concert of the season, "Collected Dances, Part II," Thursday, March 2, through Saturday, March 4, at 7:30 p.m. in the College of Arts and Sciences auditorium.

Tickets cost $13 for adults, $11 for senior citizens and $6 for students. To purchase, call the ticket office at (307) 766-6666, stop by the Fine Arts Center box office (10 a.m.-4 p.m. weekdays) or go online at www.uwyo.edu/finearts.

Featuring a combination of vertical, ballet, modern and jazz dancing, "Collected Dances, Part II" will showcase the original choreography of UW faculty members Mel Claridge, Margaret Wilson, Vincent Brosseau and Marsha Knight.

The concert will open with two works by Brosseau, "Border," a modern dance piece inspired by an article published in The New York Times about the increasing number of women crossing the Mexican border, and "A Moment."

Wilson's contributions include the modern dance piece, "Standing on Fishes" and a vertical dance piece, "The rise of the proletariat."

"Vertical dance explores dimensions of dance in the air," says Wilson, "but in this case, the dancers do get their feet on the ground once in a while, even though the 'ground' may be the back wall of the theatre."

Knight's "Of a Mind" blends both ballet and modern dance and "Excerpt, Dances for Two or Less (1987)," taken from one of Knight's larger works, is a study of motion on a restricted plane.

Closing out the concert are two pieces by Claridge. "The Letter," a modern dance set during the Civil War period, and "Broadway Bound," a jazz revue patterned in the style of several famous Broadway musical dance numbers.
