UW’s robust scholarship program helps many students reach graduation with little or no debt.

By Micaela Myers

As college prices nationwide continue to increase at a rate faster than inflation, a university’s base tuition and the scholarships it offers become all the more important to students and parents.

“According to recent recruitment and retention studies, most students rank the importance of scholarships as their number one or number two concern when selecting an institution of higher education to attend,” says University of Wyoming Director of Student Financial Aid Joanna Carter, who retired this spring. “UW student satisfaction surveys repeatedly show that students are very concerned about the availability of scholarships.”

“The cost is one of the main factors when choosing a university,” agrees Lee Tendore of Fort Washakie, Wyo., a junior in American Indian studies.

“Scholarships can be a deciding factor on where someone chooses to attend. Receiving scholarships gives people more motivation to succeed and can take away the stress of having to pay for college costs. Financial stress can be a great barrier to success. Scholarships that are offered at any college or university are very important and especially to me personally because I am a family man, married with two kids, and making the move to Laramie, Wyo., was not going to be easy. The financial aid and scholarships I received made the transition for us all a lot easier and more manageable.”
