Business Minors

Our College of Business (COB) minors are tailor-made for those who want to explore the wide range of possibilities offered in the business world.
A minor in the College of Business may be just what you need to make your resume catch the eye of a potential employer.  It might also give you some terrific ideas about how to put your major to work.  Whether you're a College of Business major with an interest in another field or a non-business major who wants to enhance your basic business understanding, discover the many possibilities we can offer you by following the links below.

All on campus students, including College of Business majors, are eligible to earn College of Business minors. All students must have an established UW cumulative 2.50 GPA to apply. Minors are not available to online students. Minors must be approved prior to graduating semester. To apply or for more information, stop by BU 175 W.

Minor Requirements:

  • The cumulative minor GPA must be a 2.50 at graduation.
  • A minimum grade of “C” is required for each minor course.
  • Prerequisites must be completed prior to the first day of classes.
  • Non-business majors are allowed to take up to 30 credit hours of COB courses.
  • The Advanced Business Standing prerequisite is waived for non-business majors
    but individual course prerequisites are not waived.
  • It is your responsibility to monitor these requirements.

Accounting (Requirements)

Accounting isn't just about dollars and cents or debits and credits anymore. Accounting includes the whole range of business information management. A minor in Accounting will give you the tools you need to understand basic accounting information - a set of skills that will be useful to you no matter what career you choose.

Banking and Financial Services (Requirements)

Our minor in Banking and Financial Services is designed to give you a solid understanding of the primary issues and tools in the management and regulation of financial institutions. It will equip you to embark on a career in this important, challenging, and dynamic field.

Decision Science (Requirements)

A minor in Decision Science will give you a strong foundation in quantitative methods, computer information systems, and operations management-all valuable tools in understanding the business operations.  From manufacturing to Total Quality Management, you'll learn about the more quantitative side of business management.

Economics (Requirements)

A minor in Economics will deepen your understanding of economic institutions, policies, and issues, which will give you an edge in today's dynamic, uncertain world. Our Economics minor will allow you to get a broad understanding of Economics or to sharpen your focus on an area you want to learn more about.

Entrepreneurship (Requirements)

Our Entrepreneurship minor exposes you to business courses that will prepare you to solve the problems facing a small business entrepreneur. An exciting feature of this minor includes the chance to consult with small businesses in the region. With a minor in Entrepreneurship, you'll gain an understanding of the special strategic issues of managing a small firm.

Our minor in Finance will give you a background in the financial management of organizations as well as a broad understanding of the management of risk. The Finance minor can also provide you with the latitude to pursue specialized financial topics that suit your personal interests.

Real Estate Finance (Requirements)

Upon completion of the course requirements for the Real Estate Finance Minor students will have broad understanding of the direct and indirect real estate markets. Students will be equipped with the appropriate financial tools and concepts and be familiar with real estate software that will allow them to identify and take advantage of investment opportunities in these markets. The knowledge acquired in these courses can be applied in the business world whether a particular student would like, among other, to engage in property development, advise on real estate investments, manage portfolios of real estate properties, invest in Real Estate Investment Trusts or lend money secured by real estate.

Sustainable Business Practices (Requirements)

Sustainable business practices are innovative strategic and tactical actions that seek to improve balanced economic, environmental and social outcomes for the firm and key stakeholders in both the long and short term.
