Student Resources for Success

When I first started college, I was so excited for my new adventure, but also a little nervous about moving away and being on my own. I was worried about doing well in school, making friends, and finding my place at UW. It is totally normal to feel that way, and there are plenty of resources available on campus to help with your transition to college.

Just like any student, I was nervous about how different college was, and my high school teachers made college sound very hard. Don’t be scared. College is very manageable as long as you go to class and put in the effort to study and complete your assignments. There are also plenty of resources across campus to help with all your academic needs. Every professor offers office hours so you can go in and visit with them for help, or any more in-depth questions you have. You should definitely go into these office hours! It is a great way to get to know your professor better, especially the professors who teach some of the larger classes. It is also a great way to get a little more specialized help if you are having trouble understanding something in class.

Student Academic Resources

The University of Wyoming also offers STEP Tutoring and the Writing Center. STEP Tutoring provides tutoring hours where peer tutors can assist in a variety of classes. Using STEP tutoring was super helpful for me to do well in my math classes. The Writing Center offers feedback on any writing you may be doing. They offer great guidance on research papers, and it is helpful to get another set of eyes on your writing to get the best grade. Individual colleges also have tons of resources to help with success in your specific major. As a marketing student, I use the Johnson Student Success Center for help with my résumé and get awesome advice about career preparedness from the events they host on campus.

Campus Events

Speaking of events, there are so many different events you can attend and organizations that you can join to find friends, develop new interests, or continue with your passions. I love being involved in the campus community and helping other students enjoy their time at UW. My freshman year I joined 7220 Entertainment to help plan campus events, which was so fun.

I loved to attend the events, however I loved even more to help plan the events. The Center for Student Involvement and Leadership (CSIL) can help you find the perfect way to get involved. Trying new things is such an important part of college! I highly recommend that you go to an event or join a club that you wouldn't’t have before. That is so important to find yourself and figure out what you enjoy. No matter what you are looking to do there is a club or organization you will love to be a part of at UW.

Staying Active

Staying healthy and prioritizing wellness is also a super important part of finding success adjusting to college. Half Acre Recreation and Wellness Center is your go-to spot for everything health and wellness. Half Acre offers a large variety of exercise equipment so that you can do whatever kind of workout you prefer. They also offer many different workout classes, so if you love Yoga, HIIT, or any other workout, they have the perfect guided class for you. The Wellness Center within Half Acre offers plenty of resources and events to help with your physical and mental health. Kitty Cuddle time and Puppy Playdates are the perfect way to cuddle some pets if you are missing your own. Stop by The Wellness Center on Friday mornings on your way to class for Free Fruit Fridays. Half Acre Recreation and Wellness Center will ensure you are staying healthy in your transition to college.

Mental Wellness

Another important resource on campus is the University Counseling Center (UCC). UCC offers free counseling services to all currently enrolled students. If you are struggling with the transition to college or coping with any personal things, they can help provide you with someone to listen or important advice on how to cope. UCC can help with any stress or anxiety you are struggling with because of school or a personal event you need some help with. It is important to remember that there are many resources to keep you well, so reach out anytime with anything!

 

I have loved my time at the University of Wyoming and created so many lifelong memories and friends. No matter what you are looking to do in college, UW is here to help you transition successfully and enjoy this new adventure.
