Application/Hiring Process Information


Mission

The mission of the University of Wyoming Orientation Program is to provide services and assistance that will:

  1. Aid new students in their transition to UW.
  2. Expose new students to the broad educational and co-curricular opportunities of the University of Wyoming.
  3. Lead small group discussions.
  4. Integrate new students into campus life at UW.
  5. Familiarize students’ families with campus and services.
  6. Participate in the evaluation process of orientation programs.

Expectations

The minimum expectations and responsibilities for Orientation Leaders include:

  1. Attend and actively participate in the Orientation Leader training program.
    1. Full-time training is tentatively scheduled for May 19-22 and May 26-29. Dates may be added or changed without notice.  Tentative move-in day is Tuesday, May 19.
  2. Work all the Orientation sessions (subject to change):
    1. Discovery Days:  Saturday, April 11, 2020
    2. Transfer Advising Day:  Monday, April 27, 2020
    3. June Orientation Sessions:  June 1-2, 4-5, 8-12, 15-16, 18-19, 22-26, and 29-30, 2020.
    4. International Orientation:  Tentatively scheduled for Thursday, August 20 and Friday, August 21, 2020
    5. August Orientation:  tentatively scheduled for Friday, August 21, 2020
  3. Assist with the organization, planning, and implementation of orientation activities.
  4. Answer questions of all kinds about UW and Laramie.
  5. Give campus tours to new students and their parents when required.
  6. Fulfill additional responsibilities as assigned.

Please note: Attendance is mandatory at all sessions listed in #1 and #2 above-including all training and Orientation session.


Qualifications

The minimum qualifications for Orientation Leaders include:

  1. Understand and believe in the mission of the University of Wyoming Orientation Program.
  2. Being able to positively interact and relate well with students, parents, faculty, and administrators.
  3. Have a high energy level, a commitment to teamwork, strong communication skills, and be responsible, reliable, flexible, and confident.
  4. Be an undergraduate student (or Spring 2020 graduating senior) in good academic standing and in good standing with the Dean of Students Office.
  5. Demonstrate a desire to learn about UW, its regulations, people, programs, and  community.
  6. Have a basic understanding of UW and its opportunities.

Benefits

The basic benefits for University of Wyoming Orientation Leaders include the opportunity to:

  1. Work with a great team; develop strong communication and leadership skills, knowledge, and service to others.
  2. Serve as a role model while assisting in the recruitment, transition, and retention of new students.
  3. Earn $9 per hour for meetings, trainings, and Orientation sessions.
  4. Receive lunch, snack and dinner on day one and breakfast and lunch on day two of each Freshmen Orientation session.
  5. Stay for free in the Residence Halls during May training and June Orientation sessions.
  6. Acquire a $100 WyoOne meal stipend to use during May training and June Orientation sessions.
  7. Receive free gear.

Hiring Process

The Office of Admissions will hire about 16 student leaders for Orientation.

Optional Information Sessions:

  • Thursday, December 12:  4:15-5:00pm, Union, Room 202
  • Thursday, January 30:  12:30-1:15pm; Union, Room 203
  • Tuesday, February 4:  4:15-5:00pm; Union, Room 203

Application

The application consists of references, a one-page resume, and short answer questions.  The application cannot be saved and MUST be completed in one session. 

The following short answer questions should each be answered in 750 characters or less in the application:

  1. Why do you want to work as part of UW's Orientation Leader Team?
  2. Why do you feel it is important for incoming students to attend Orientation?
  3. Identify three personal strengths that will contribute to your effectiveness as an Orientation Leader.

Reference Form

It is the applicant’s responsibility to ensure that a reference form from at least two of the listed references on the application is completed by Friday, February 7, 2020 by 5pm. Do NOT use a friend or family member; professional and academic references only please.

Group Interview

Candidates MUST participate in a Group Interview, unless away from campus for a University exception (studying abroad, student teaching, nursing practicum, etc) during the Spring semester.  Group interviews are scheduled for Tuesday, February 11, 2020 from 7-9pm or Wednesday, February 12, 2020 from 6-8pm in the Union, Ballroom.  Come prepared for icebreakers, a group activity, and a Q&A session. Sign up for your interview by 5pm on Friday, February 7, 2020 at the Campus Visitor Center in the Wyoming Union.

2nd Round Personal Interview

To find out if you have been invited to a personal interview, check your UW email account by February 18, 2020. Please remember that if you are invited to a personal interview, you will need to sign up for a time slot at the Campus Visitor Center in the Wyoming Union. Please allow 30 minutes for your interview, which is tentatively scheduled for March 2-6, 2020.


Summer Classes/Part-time Enrollment

It is very difficult for Orientation Leaders to take summer classes or work another job while Orientation is in session.
