Orientation Leader Information


The mission of the University of Wyoming Orientation Program is to provide services and assistance that will:

  1. Aid new students in their transition to UW.
  2. Expose new students to the broad educational and co-curricular opportunities of the University of Wyoming.
  3. Integrate new students into campus life at UW.
  4. Familiarize students’ families with campus and services.


The minimum expectations and responsibilities for Orientation Leaders include:

  1. Attend and actively participate in the Orientation Leader training program.
    1. Full-time training is tentatively scheduled for May 20-24 and May 28-29. Dates may be added or changed without notice.  Tentative move in day is Sunday, May 19.
  2. Work all the orientation sessions (subject to change):
    1. Discovery Days:  April 6, 2019
    2. Transfer Advising Day:  April 26, 2019
    3. June Orientation Sessions:  May 30-31, June 3-7, 10-11, 13-14, 17-21, 24-25, and 27-28, 2019.
    4. International Orientation:  TBD
    5. August Orientation:  tentatively scheduled for September 3, 2019
    6. Cowboy Connect:  tentatively scheduled for August 31-September 2, 2019
  3. Assist with the organization, planning, and implementation of orientation activities.
  4. Acquaint new students with campus services, activities, facilities, and encourage them to fully participate in the UW environment.
  5. Answer questions of all kinds about UW and Laramie.
  6. Lead small group discussions.
  7. Give campus tours to new students and their parents when required.
  8. Participate in the evaluation process of orientation programs.
  9. Fulfill additional responsibilities as assigned.

Please note: Attendance is mandatory at all sessions-including training, Orientation, and Cowboy Connect.


The minimum qualifications for Orientation Leaders include:

  1. Understand and believe in the mission of the University of Wyoming Orientation Program.
  2. Relate well with students, parents, faculty, and administrators.
  3. Have a high energy level, a commitment to teamwork, strong communication skills, and be responsible, reliable, flexible, and confident.
  4. Be an undergraduate student (or Spring 2019 graduating senior) in good academic standing and in good standing with the Dean of Students Office.
  5. Demonstrate a desire to learn about UW, its regulations, its people, its programs, and its community.
  6. Have a basic understanding of UW and its opportunities.


The basic benefits for University of Wyoming Orientation Leaders include the opportunity to:

  1. Work with a great team; develop strong communication and leadership skills, knowledge, and service to others.
  2. Serve as a role model while assisting in the recruitment, transition, and retention of new students.
  3. Earn $9 per hour for meetings, trainings, and Orientation sessions.
  4. Receive snack, lunch, and dinner on day one and breakfast and lunch on day two of each Freshmen Orientation session.
  5. Stay for free in the Residence Halls during May training and June orientation.
  6. Acquire a $100 WyoOne meal stipend to use during May training and June Orientation.
  7. Receive free gear.

Hiring Process

The Office of Admissions will hire about 16 student leaders for orientation.

  • Thursday, November 29:  12:30-1:15pm; Union, Room 203
  • Wednesday, December 5:  4:15-5:00pm, Union, Senate Chambers
  • Thursday, January 31:  12:30-1:15pm; Union, Room 203
  • Wednesday, February 6:  4:15-5:00pm; Union, Room 203


The application consists of references, a one-page resume, and short answer questions.  The application cannot be saved and MUST be completed in one session. 

The following short answer questions should each be answered in 750 characters or less in the application:

  1. Why do you want to work as part of UW's Orientation Leader Team?
  2. Why do you feel it is important for incoming students to attend Orientation?
  3. Identify three personal strengths that will contribute to your effectiveness as an Orientation Leader.

Reference Form

It is the applicant’s responsibility to ensure that a reference form from at least two of the listed references on the application is completed by Friday, February 8, 2019 by 5pm. Do NOT use a friend or family member; professional and academic only please.

Group Interview

Every applicant MUST attend a group interview on Tuesday, February 12, 2019 from 7-9pm or Wednesday February 13, 2019 from 6-8pm at the Marian H. Rochelle Gateway Center.  Come prepared for icebreakers, a group activity, and a Q&A session. Sign up for your interview by 5pm on Friday, February 8, 2019 at the Campus Visitor Center in the Wyoming Union.

2nd Round Personal Interview

To find out if you have been invited to a personal interview, check your UW email account by February 15, 2019. Please remember that if you are invited to a personal interview, you will need to sign up for a time slot at the Campus Visitor Center in the Wyoming Union. Please allow 30 minutes for your interview, which is tentatively scheduled for February 25-March 1, 2019.

Summer Classes/Part-time Enrollment

It is very difficult for orientation leaders to take summer classes or work another job while orientation is in session. Please contact Amy Fenolia ( or Katie Watson ( for more information.
