Eighteenth-Century Women Writers

This virtual exhibit serves as a companion to our "Eighteenth-Century Women Writers" display in the loggia of the American Heritage Center August 14-28, 2019.

The aim of this exhibit is to highlight the contributions of eighteenth-century women to literary culture. All of the books featured in the loggia display and scanned in this virtual exhibit are part of the collections of the Toppan Rare Books Library at the University of Wyoming's American Heritage Center and can be reviewed upon request. Please contact the reference services unit at 307-766-3756 or for more information on accessing rare books. While some of the other books mentioned within this exhibit are not held by the Toppan Rare Books Library, many modern publications of these novels and works can be found through Coe Library at the University of Wyoming.

This exhibit was curated by the University of Wyoming English Department Graduate Student, Lydia Stuver, in conjunction with the American Heritage Center.

While this exhibit focuses on British women authors who did just that, the late-eighteenth-century also saw the rise of many female American or British-American authors, including women such as Susanna Rowson (author of Charlotte Temple and numerous other works published in both England and America), Hannah Webster Foster (author of The Coquette) and Phillis Wheatley (author of Poems on Various Subjects, Religious and Moral). To learn more about these women, check out their books at the University of Wyoming Libraries.
