A document from the John and Frances Casement Papers
The letters used in Westward Migration were all written by individuals moving West following the American Civil War, and sometimes by their family members who remained in the East. The letters describe a variety of locations and activities, as well as the challenges and emotions experienced by those pushing westward and those left behind.
The letters provided here come from four Western pioneer collections at the American Heritage Center. Click on the collection name below to browse the letters and learn more about the people who wrote them.
