Who was Clarence Jayne?

Dr. Clarence Jayne is the celebrated founder of the adult education program at the University of Wyoming and was a nationally known and respected adult educator. Between 1945 and 1963, Dr. Jayne was a UW faculty member. In 1950, he became the Director of the newly formed Adult Education Department in the College of Education.

Dr. Jayne, a native of Edwall, Washington, received his bachelor's degree in education from the University of Washington in 1929 and his Ph.M. and Ph.D. degrees from the University of Wisconsin in 1940 and 1942.

From 1929 until 1945 he was an instructor at Wisconsin's Central State Teacher's College, then was appointed acting principal and sixth grade supervisor of UW's elementary school.

He was in charge of various activities in the UW division of adult education and community service, including extension classes, audiovisual services and field summer schools.

In 1953, he went to Germany as an exchange specialist in adult education, traveled widely in Latin America in 1954-1955 visiting technical assistants and missionary programs in that area and served as a Fulbright lecturer in adult education in New Zealand during the 1956-1957 academic year.

From 1960 until 1962, Dr. Jayne was Director of the teacher training mission in Liberia, working closely with the Liberian Department of Public Education in "Operation Crossroads Africa."

Dr. Jayne was a member of the national executive committee of the Adult Education Association, was named president-elect of that organization in 1962. He also served on the national selection committee of the Fund for Adult Education and was a director of the Mountain Plains Adult Education Project. He co-authored the book "Adult Education-the Community Approach" and wrote numerous articles for national publication.

Dr. Jayne's contributions to the adult education program at UW and his national contributions to the field are recognized in the ALT Department with the yearly awarding of the Clarence Jayne Scholarship and the Jayne Media Library. The Clarence Jayne scholarship was originated by Mrs. Jayne and the Jayne family in his memory. Mrs. Jayne has since passed away.
