Exploring Natural and Cultural History in Kenya, East Africa

June 8-June 23, 2007

Join University of Wyoming faculty and program coordinators John Kambutu and Michael Day for a sixteen day exploration of a variety of Kenyan habitats and the relationship that exists between local peoples and the wildlife at home in these settings. The learning adventure of a lifetime awaits you.

Described as the birthplace of the human species, East Africa retains Garden of Eden characteristics: beauty, diversity, complexity, and drama. Beginning and ending in Nairobi, travel a grand 800 mile loop in comfortable eight passenger tour vehicles as guests of Maridadi Safaris Ltd. Visit Mt. Kenya, cross the Great Rift Valley and explore alkaline lakes dotted with Flamingos, hike in mountain and tropical rain forests, and experience first-hand one of the most popular parks in Kenya, the Maasai Mara (the northern extension of Tanzania's Serengeti National Park). Along the way meet a variety of local peoples such as the mainly farmers Kikuyu in the Central Highlands; the Turgen, Pokots, Marakwets (sub-tribes of Kalenjins); and the Jemps with their fascinating traditions along the shores of Great Rift Valley Lakes Baringo and Bogoria; the Luhyas of Kakamega forest; the Luos of Lake Victoria; Kisiis of Nyanza with their specialty of soap stone covings; possibly the Ogiek, indigenous hunter-gathers; and finally the semi-nomadic Maasais of Maasai Mara.

This sixteen day adult education program is designed for the hearty traveler who enjoys time spent in nature, adventure, learning new things, as well as the company of others. Content goals are achieved through direct exploration of savannas, mountains, forests, lakes, rivers and the peoples and wildlife that reside in the area. This is a very active program with time each day spent outdoors studying varying landscapes, ecological relationships and interacting with local peoples. Elevation is often above 4,000 ft. and there are moderate nature hikes therefore participants should enjoy physical activity.

Participants are responsible for making their own airline reservations, though recommendations and suggestions for flight arrangements will be provided. The in country cost of the program is 3,450.00. This does not include travel to and from Nairobi. Program is limited to 12 participants.

Reservations will be accepted after May 15, 2006. For further information and to make reservations contact the UW Outreach School at (307) 766-6802 or 1-877-733-3618 ext. 5. A deposit of $300.00 is required to initially hold your reservation. We anticipate airline reservations made in December (not covered by program costs).
