Doctor of Education: Areas of Specialization

Adult and Post Secondary Education:

Graduate study in adult and post secondary education revolves around issues and problems in adult education. Studies will be oriented toward the present and future while integrating the past; address the individual learner within the context of community, societal, and international and the globalized world issues; focus on the impact of technology in educational design and practice; recognize and promote perspectives which celebrate cultural plurality; enable the participant to critically examine educational research and literature, to be able to compare with other nations' theories and practice; and address a commitment to reflective practice, critical thinking and lifelong learning.

Instructional Technology:

The field of Instructional Technology focuses on a systematic process of integrating human resources, hardware and media to support learning. Graduates in instructional technology find jobs in public schools, community colleges and universities, administrative offices, and media centers. Graduates also are employed in business and military training venues or as private consultants in instructional design and technology.

Distance Education:

This option prepares providers of education via distance technologies, including trainers and educators employed in business and industry; elementary, secondary and higher education; heath care; religion; nonprofit organizations; and government. Courses include learning theory, instructional design for distance teaching and learning, administration and management of distance education programs, issues pertaining to on-line instruction, and instructional applications of telecommunications.

Additional Information

Research Hours

The Ed.D. requires nine to twelve hours in research and statistics and eighteen to twenty one in adult and post secondary education, instructional technology, or distance education.

Dissertation and Project Report

In the project report (Ed.D.), the student begins with a problem for investigation (it may exist in the immediate professional setting of the student); the student then examines existing research to address how the problem may be successfully addressed -- emphasis is not on conducting original research. In addition, it is expected that students selecting the Ed.D. degree will furnish satisfactory evidence of having completed a minimum of three years of successful professional service as a post secondary education teacher, administrator or both.

Career Aspirations

Students selecting the Ed.D. degree often seek a professional service position in teaching, administration, and supervision, where they are currently employed or in a similar post secondary educational setting.

Transfer Credit

Hours transferred from other institutions must carry a letter grade of B (3.0) or better (A=4). Doctoral candidates may transfer up to 30 hours of course work, only four of which can be comparable to thesis research.

Time Allowance/Limitations

Doctoral candidates have four calendar years after the successful completion of their preliminary examination to complete their degree.

Grade Point Average

A minimum 3.0 grade point average (GPA) or better is required for all course work required for the doctoral degree. Hours for which a C was earned may be balanced by a corresponding number of hours for which an A was earned.

Continuous Enrollment

Once admitted, doctoral students are expected to maintain continuous enrollment at least one hour (excluding summer sessions) each semester. After students achieve candidacy (successfully completed the preliminary examination) they are required to maintain continuous registration through the defense of the dissertation/project report and formal graduation. Exceptions are students attending the university only during summer sessions; these degree candidates should maintain enrollment every summer session and during the semester of intended graduation.
