  • What is your team name?
  • Are you a campus team or a community team?

  • Which events do you plan to participate in?

Teams can choose which events they would like to participate in and are not required to complete all events for the Golden Boot Competition.

The Details

Are you a UW department, student group, or Laramie business that LOVES to show off your UW pride for Homecoming? The Gold Boot Competition is for you! We are excited to have campus and community competitors from all over Laramie compete in several events to show off their Poke Pride and have a great time doing it.

This year, teams will have the option to compete in the traditional space decoration and parade float competitions, along with a social media competition, Horseshoe Hunt, and community service project. Additionally, teams can participate in this year’s inaugural Tribute to Steamboat event

We encourage teams to be formed by departments, student organizations, local businesses, and so on. If individual student groups are formed, please select an appropriate team name and have no more than 10 team members. Standing campus organizations and local businesses are welcome to have more than 10 team members, but certain events will have limits on the number of people from a single team who are allowed to compete.

At the end of the week, a campus winner and community winner will be named. Campus winners will receive a $250 prize for their organization, as well as another $250 to be donated to a charitable organization of their choice. Community winners will receive $250 to be donated to a campus organization or department, as well as another $250 to be donated to a charitable organization of their choice.

Teams should email uwalumni@uwyo.edu by the end of day, Oct. 14, if you intend to compete in this year’s competition. Teams may enter past this date, but the more time we have to plan, the better. Thank you!

Information for Teams

Homecoming Space Decoration

Homecoming space decoration is a traditional fixture of the Golden Boot. Teams must decorate a space of their choosing in accordance with this year’s Homecoming theme while also incorporating UW Spirit. Picture and video submissions for this event are due to uwalumni@uwyo.edu by Monday, Oct. 17 at 5 p.m., and it is encouraged that spaces remain decorated for the full week of Homecoming. Submissions will be judged by a panel of UW Alumni Association staff. Subject line of your email should be “[Team Name], Space Decoration Competition.”

Restrictions

Teams may only use personnel and decorations created from your team. Smaller teams may split a space with another team close in proximity if feasible. If you are submitting photos that include individuals and not just decorations, please submit a University of Wyoming Model Release Form for each individual pictured.

Teams can be any size but should only consist of those associated with the space, group, or team—for example, a space designated to Sales Club, UniWyo Credit Union, or Sigma Chi.

Points

50 for 1st place, 30 for 2nd place, 10 for 3rd place, 5 for all participants. 1st through 3rd place will be awarded to both campus participants and community participants.

Cowboy Hat Decoration

This event is intended to serve as a substitute for student teams or organizations that do not have access to a designated space. In this event, teams will decorate a cowboy hat in accordance with this year’s Homecoming theme while also incorporating UW Spirit. If teams wish to participate in this competition, they MUST inform the UWAA no later than Oct. 14, so there is enough time to order hats for all the teams who wish to participate. Picture and video submissions for this event will be due to uwalumni@uwyo.edu by Monday, Oct. 17, at 5 p.m., and it is encouraged that hats remain displayed for the full week of Homecoming. Hats will be judged by a panel of UWAA staff. Subject line should be “[Team Name], Cowboy Hat Decoration Competition.”

Restrictions

Other than the provided hat, teams may only use personnel and decorations created from your group or team. If you are submitting photos that include individuals and not just the decorated hat, please submit a University of Wyoming Model Release Form for each individual pictured.

Points

50 for 1st place, 30 for 2nd place, 10 for 3rd place, 5 for all participants.

Homecoming Parade

Teams may participate in the UWYO homecoming parade on the morning of Oct. 22, with either a float, walking group, or other form of entry. Teams will be judged and scored based on construction quality, use of theme, overall appearance, and originality. The categories for awards will include: 1) Overall Winner/Most Creative, 2) Best Use of Theme, and 3) Walking Group. Campus and community groups will receive points based on the same parade categories and placings.

More information and the application, due Oct. 14, can be found on the Homecoming Parade website

Horseshoe Hunt

The Associated Students of the University of Wyoming Student Government (ASUW) will be conducting their annual Horseshoe Hunt, in which ASUW will hide two horseshoes per day around campus. Hints to find the horseshoes can be found on ASUW’s social media, specifically Instagram. If a team finds a horseshoe, they should bring it back to the ASUW office in the basement of the Wyoming Union and let whoever collects the horseshoe know that they are competing in the Golden Boot to receive 5 points per horseshoe (maximum of 3). Since ASUW puts on this event specifically for students and offers prizes for it, we ask that businesses and community teams do not participate in this event.

Community Service*

Teams will plan and execute a community service event focused on the UW campus and/or Laramie community. These events can be as simple or complex as teams would like. However, a good faith effort, to include marketing and set up, is required. Teams must submit their events in advance to the UWAA by Friday, Oct. 14, at 5 p.m., and it is encouraged that events run for the full week of Homecoming. All teams will be awarded 50 points for participation in this event. * Teams may only be counted in either the community service event or UW Giving Day, not both, although anyone can participate in both.

UW Giving Day*

Instead of participating in the community service event, student teams may participate in UW Giving Day by doing the following—individuals must sign up to be a Giving Day Ambassador and share or repost at least one piece of the University of Wyoming Foundation's Giving Day marketing on social media. Individuals can earn 5 points by doing this, and up to 10 individuals per team can participate (maximum of 50 points). Screenshots of participation must be submitted in one email to the UWAA at uwalumni@uwyo.edu by Oct. 20 at 5 p.m. * Teams may only be counted in either the community service event or UW Giving Day, not both, although anyone can participate in both.

Social Media Competition

For the social media competition, teams may compete by submitting no more than two posts (total)—Facebook posts, Instagram posts, Instagram reels, TikToks, or any combination of these. Each post submission will be worth 10 points, for 20 points possible. Posts should be submitted to uwalumni@uwyo.edu by 5 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 20.

Homecoming Sing

This year’s Homecoming Sing competition will not be held as an in-person event like in past years. Instead, this year teams will submit a 30– to 60-second Instagram reel, TikTok, or other video post that is created around a song. This can be a lip sync, dance video, or other type of music-focused activity, and teams can create and choreograph their own song and performance, manipulate words, or sing a cover.  Submissions for this event are due to uwalumni@uwyo.edu by Wednesday, October 19, at 5 p.m. All submissions should be appropriate for family viewing and will be judged on the following categories:

  • creativity in performance,
  • relevance/connection to the UW Homecoming theme, “Dancing in the Dirt,”
  • quality of sound/video, and
  • overall performance.

Homecoming Trivia

This student-focused event will take place in Pokes Pub and Game Room in the Wyoming Union on Tuesday, Oct. 18, at 7 p.m. Students will need to ensure that their team’s name is recorded so points can be accurately tallied as part of the Golden Boot Competition.

Tribute to Steamboat (Homecoming Rodeo)

The Tribute to Steamboat event with the Homecoming Rodeo will feature two events for the Golden Boot Challenge—Calf Dressing and a Rodeo Relay. A BBQ will begin at 5 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 20, at Hansen Livestock Arena followed by the rodeo events and a swing dance in the dirt. Transportation by bus to the arena from the Wyoming Union will begin at 4:30 p.m.

Here are the details of two events for the Golden Boot Competition—Calf Dressing and a Rodeo Relay.

  • Calf Dressing: Teams of 3-5 will be tasked with putting a t-shirt over the head and forelegs of a calf provided by the UW Rodeo Team. Once the t-shirt is on the team calf, teams must guide their animal to a designated area within the arena.
  • Rodeo Relay: This will be a timed event. Teams of three will participate in a relay in the rodeo arena that includes a stick horse race, a dummy rope, and a bale stack.
  • Teams may register here: http://uw.uwyo.edu/tribute.
  • Please note that all teams are allowed to have only one entry in each of the Tribute to Steamboat events.
