Though banis= hed to India, this very sp= ecial monk actively and optimistically works to preserve his religion, his people= and Tibet itself.

SUSPINO takes an unflinchi= ng look at the persecution that continues to plague Eur= ope's largest and most vilified minority. With the fall of communism and rise of right-wing nationalism, the Roma (or "Gypsies" as they are pejoratively called) have become scapegoats for East= ern Europe's nascent democracies.=

Because of violent conflic= ts and discrimination, tens of thousands of Eastern European Roma are fleeing their countries. The film focuses on Romania where Europe's largest concentration of Roma are considered 'public enemies', and Italy, where the Roma are classified as nomads and relegated to living in camps. Here they a= re denied basic human rights.

open= ing documentary, based on the book Disposable People, brings to light the horri= ble cases of slavery in the Indian rug-making industry, the cocoa plantations in the Ivory Coast, and e= ven in the homes of World Bank officials in the United States. The filmmakers go so far as to buy slaves in Africa and help set free child slaves in <= st1:country-region w:st=3D"on">India to show how slavery pla= ys into the global economy.
