5.30pm THE NEW RULERS OF THE WORLD

In= order to examine the true effects of globalization, acclaimed British journalist = John Pilger turns the spotlight on Indonesia, a country described by the World Bank as a model pupil until its globalized economy collapsed in 1998. The film examines the use of sweatshop factories= by famous brand names, and asks some penetrating questions. Who are the real beneficiaries of the globalized economy? John Pilger goes behind the hype of the new global economy and looks at the new rulers of the world -- the great multinationals and the governments and institutions that back them -- the I= MF and the World Bank.

Her joy at finding him turns into a nightmare as he insists = she submit to his choice of marriage to an old man, and that she undergo female genital mutilation, as is the custom in his tribe. She is forced to flee her father's village, seeking refugee status in the U.S. Instead she becomes enme= shed in the U.S. immigration system.

Ecol= e n° 1 is a primary school situa= ted in a neighborhood of Brussels with a high non-native population. It is a school that practices a system of positive discrimination. Bran= ded as a “waste bin of a school”, an epithet as offensive as it is derogatory, Ecole n°1 has children from twenty-three different countrie= s on its register. The number of Belgian pupils can be counted on the fingers of= one hand. The headmaster is a humanist fighting a daily battle against exclusio= n, failure and racism. This film= takes us through the events of the school year from its beginning in September 20= 01 to the prize-giving ceremony in June 2002.

This film tells a story about w= omen from southern Sudan and their experiences as refugees now living in the USA. The Sudanese people have= been displaced all over the world as a result of an ongoing religious war between the north and south. There are now thousands of young Sudanese men living in the United States but less than one hundred women. The women were not as easy to relocate and the documentary explains why.=

Th= e Day My God Died is a feature-length documentary that tells the stories of Nepalese girls swept up by the international child sex trade. In their own words, we hear how the day traffickers took each of them from their rural villages and sold them into sexual servitude in the brothels of <= st1:country-region w:st=3D"on">India. The girls describe it = as, "the day my god died." The film documents the fact that these sto= ries are not isolated or haphazard. The industry has formed a pipeline in which every person in the chain profits except for the girls, who pay the price w= ith their lives. This heart-wrenching documentary offers a memorable portrayal = of the corruption and evil behind the curtain of India's sex industry, providi= ng us with a brief glimpse into a world seldom seen by outsiders.

In isolated communities around the world, particularly in India, Nep= al and the United States, Tibetan exiles have created a 'virtual Tibet,' where they have endur= ed and even flourished in the face of overwhelming adversity.
"Dreaming of Tibet" follows their arduous journeys from Tibet into exile over a 19,00= 0-foot Himalayan pass. It’s a flight that the Dalai Lama took in 1958 and ov= er 150,000 of his followers have taken since then. Most have only minimal clot= hing and meager provisions to make the life-threatening trek. Many die along the way. This intimate documentar= y is about the resilience of the human spirit under the most dire circumstances.= The film looks at the lives of three extraordinary Tibetan exiles who have surv= ived in exile and are deeply involved in working for the survival of their culture. They are a political activist who is one of the Dalai Lama's press coordinators in Los Angeles, a nurse working with recent refugees in Kathmandu, and= a monk in the Mt. Everest foothills.

This= film examines the indigenous rights revolution sweeping Mexico through the municipal elections in Hueheutla, Puebla. It is a powerful st= ory of democracy in action, following the successful campaign of the Partido de la Revolicion Democractica in alliance with the Totonacs.

A = look at one Mapuche village and its struggle to preserve its traditions and dignity. The Mapuche are the indigenous people of the Andean highlands, living in th= eir ancestral homes on both sides of the Chilean-Argentine border. Since the conquest of the New World, they have fou= ght for the survival of their culture. Today, their right to self-determination= is denied while their lands, language and culture are under constant threat, despite the return to democracy in the region.

An eye-opening documentary filmed over the course of 10 days that follows four= men into the desperate world of illegal immigration. Alongside Bear, Tiger, Handsome, and Old Man, director Tommy Davis takes a 120-mile cross-desert journey that has been traveled innumerable times by nameless immigrants who= -- like these four young migrants from Michoacan, Mexico -- all had the simple, American dream for a better future. Davis = brings to life the often unheard hopes and stories of these migrants as their dehy= drated days, evading the U.S. Border Patrol, turn into sub-zero nights, filled with barbed wire, brutal storms and the ever-present confrontation with death th= at is reality for the 10s of thousands of illegal immigrants who make a similar journey into the Uni= ted States every year.

Peace One Day is the story of o= ne man’s attempts to persuade the global community via the Untied Nation= s to officially sanction a global ceasefire day; a day of non-violence; a day of peace. The documentary charts the remarkable 5-year journey of the filmmaker and he meets heads of state, Nobel Peace Laureates, aid agencies, freedom fighters, media moguls, the innocent victims of war and eventually everyone= who was anyone at the UN.

This is one man’s story of survival in war-torn Colombia. Marino Cordoba, a well-known community advocate, was forcibly displaced from his home as a result of illegal paramilitary actions. In the middle of a December night, the paramilitary death squads arrived with a list of human rights workers and community advocates. They went on a house-to-house hunt = for their victims who were still asleep in their beds. Stripped of their clothes and dignity, many victims were dragged to the streets and paraded around the town square before they were massacred.

Lured by false promises and driven by desperation, thousands of Chin= ese and Filipina women pay high fees to work in garment factories on the pacifi= c island of Saipan - the only U.S. territory exempt from labor and immigration laws. The clothing they sew, bearing the "Made in the USA" label, is shipped duty and quota-free to the U.S for sale by The GAP, J. Cr= ew, Polo and other retailers. Powerful hidden camera footage, along with the garment workers' personal stories, offers a rare and unforgettable glimpse = into indentured labor and the workings of the global sweatshop-where 14 hour shi= fts, payless paydays and lock-downs are routine.

Sikhs originating from the North Indian Punjab form a relatively large and prospe= rous immigrant group in San Francis= co. One of the expressions of their faith is the long uncut beards and colored turbans. This reminds some of Muslims and for this reason after September 1= 1th they became the target of a number of verbal and physical attacks. "I = am glad that I live in = America and I love my work as a taxi driver. Now, however I am afraid," tells = one of the figures in the short film, which exposes one of the darker sides of = the omnipresent war on terror.

9.00pm THE MURDER OF EMMETT TILL

Docu= ments the infamous 1955 Mississippi= case which began with a fourteen year-old boy whistling at a white woman in= a grocery store. Till didn’t understand that he had broken the unwritten laws of the Jim Crow South. H= e was ultimately abducted, beaten, shot through the head, and thrown into a river. His assailants were acquitted of the crime but shortly afterwards the defendants made their story public, including a detailed account of how they murdered Till. The case sparked the American civil rights movement.
