The 2013 University of Wyoming Meat Judging Team competed in their first contest of the year at the National Western Stock Show. The contest was held at JBS Beef in Greeley, Colorado and the awards banquet was held at the stock show in Denver.
“The team was rewarded for their hard work. Students gave up almost two weeks of their Christmas vacation to practice, oftentimes putting in 12 hour days,” said Zeb Gray, judging team coach. “It is great to see them have such success early and it really sets the tone for the rest of the season.”
The team won the lamb judging and placings division along with finishing in the top 5 in the beef judging, reasons, and pork judging divisions. Team member Emilee Brinton won the placings and lamb judging division and was 7th in reasons. McKensie Harris was 2nd in pork judging, 4th in beef judging, and 5th in reasons. Chris Block was 2nd in lamb judging and 4th in placings. Lara Allnutt was 8th in lamb judging and 12th in pork judging.
Additional team members included: Jaris Baker, Frankie Domenico, Katie Ferree, and Austin Buzanowski.
“This team is very special in the way that they interact with one another. They all push each other to be better in a competitive spirit but they have become great friends at the same time. It is going to be a great year,” said Gray.
