Record Breaking Spring for the Meat Judging Team!
The 2013 University of Wyoming Meat Judging Team has wrapped up a record breaking semester. The team competed in 4 contests this spring and garnered numerous individual and team awards while breaking several University of Wyoming (UW) records. Team members included: Lara Allnutt, Austin Buzanowski, Chris Block, Emilee Brinton, Jaris Baker, Frankie Domenico, Katie Ferree and McKensie Harris.
The season started off strong at the National Western Stock Show in Denver, CO with a 5th place finish. The team managed to win two divisions (placings and lamb judging), which has not been done by a UW team in almost 15 years. Emilee Brinton was the high individual in both divisions with teammate Chris Block earning 2nd in lamb judging and 4th in placings. McKensie Harris finished 2nd in pork judging, 4th in beef judging and 5th in reasons.
The team then traveled to the Ft. Worth Stock Show and Rodeo the last weekend in January to compete in the Southwestern Contest. The team earned a respectable 6th place finish while managing to break several records. The team broke the UW team placings record with Lara Allnutt leading the team, posting the 2nd highest individual placing score in UW history, dropping just 2 points out of 500. The team posted the 2nd highest pork judging score in UW history with McKensie Harris leading the team, earning the 3rd highest score in UW history. Frankie Domenico posted the 6th highest individual score ever by a UW judger.
On February 23th, the team competed in the Iowa State Invitational Contest in Ames, Iowa and earned 4th place. The team was led by Austin Buzanowski who was the high individual in beef judging and overall beef. The team finished 2nd in reasons with a score that was 3rd highest in UW history. McKensie Harris led the team in this category posting the 2nd highest reasons score in UW history.
On March 2nd, the team traveled to Houston to compete in the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo Contest. The competition was fierce and the team took home 10th place. However, the team was recognized for its 2nd place finish in lamb judging with 3 individuals (Lara Allnutt, Frankie Domenico and McKensie Harris) all tied for 8th place out of more than 100 contestants. Katie Ferree had a great day in placings, dropping only 10 points out of 500. Jaris Baker and Frankie Domenico posted great scores in the beef grading category and McKensie Harris again finished 2nd in reasons while breaking her week old UW record.
“The individuals that comprise the team were great representatives of the University of Wyoming,” says the team’s coach, Zeb Gray. “They sacrificed, worked hard, competed with success and exhibited the character of champions.”
