The foremost intent of the UW Meat Judging Team is to have students become proficient in distinguishing differences in relative value of various meat cuts. However, the skills that a student will gain will undoubtedly benefit them in numerous ways, both in their college/professional careers and in their personal lives. Lastly and most importantly, it is a ton of fun!

Students that choose to participate on the UW Meat Judging Team will gain a number of benefits including:

  • Extensive travel around the United States
  • First hand exposure to numerous segments of the livestock and meat industry
  • Tour the nation's largest packing plants
  • Lifelong friends
  • Upper level class credit

Who is the UW Meat Judging Team looking for?

Meat Judging is open to all students enrolled at UW.  We are looking for hard working people with a competitive attitude and the willingness and desire to learn.

I am interested. Now what do I do?

The first step is to sign up for the introduction judging class, Food Science 3550.

Please tell me about the class.

The only time that FDSC 3550 is offered for beginning judgers is in the fall semester. It is a two hour class that meets twice per week.

Do I need prior meat judging experience?

No. There are no prerequisites and the class starts at the most basic level and builds from there.

If I take the class, do I have to compete on the meat judging team?

No. Although the class is the first step for competing on the judging team, competing on the team is not a requirement of the class.

What are the eligibility requirements for competing on the meat judging team?

Students must have been enrolled at UW for at least one semester and have a cumulative G.P.A. of 2.5 while maintaining a semester G.P.A. of 2.5 during the judging season.

Where does the meat judging team compete?

Currently, we attend 8 contests per year.

In the spring we attend:

           National Western Stock Show           Denver, CO

           Fort Worth Stock Show                     Ft. Worth, TX

           Iowa State Invitational                     Ames, IA

           Houston Livestock Show & Rodeo     Houston, TX

In the fall we attend:

           Eastern National                            Wyalusing, PA

           American Royal                             Omaha, NE

           High Plains                                    Plainview, TX

           International                                  Dakota City, NE
