Animal Science Facilities

Animal Science Facilites

The Laramie Research and Extension Center was constructed in 1990 at a cost of 4.34 million dollars. The facilities consist of 12 buildings including a temperature modified lambing barn, beef and sheep sheds, a wool laboratory and classroom, a sheep handling building, a sheep confinement building, a multipurpose building, a swine confinement unit, and a state-of-the-art feed mill.

Livestock Center

 Hansen Arena

In September, 1996, the 47,500 square feet Cliff and Martha Hansen Teaching Arena was dedicated at this location. This arena is used for numerous activities including livestock laboratories, judging contests, and, equestrian practice and competition.  In addition, the rodeo team practices in this facility and the NIRA sanctioned Laramie River Rendezvous rodeo is held here in the spring.

The multipurpose building includes a complete surgical suite (900 square feet) with adjacent preparatory and recovery rooms and a 300 square feet laboratory equipped with hood, CO2 incubator, and centrifuge. Sheep and cattle are housed in adjacent outside pens equipped with feeders, waterers, chutes, and scales. The multipurpose building also contains areas for conducting sheep and cattle metabolism trials. This building is temperature controlled.

Livestock Pens

The Farm includes large capacity livestock pens used for various research and extension projects.

The Animal Science/Molecular Biology building, constructed in 1986 on campus includes a modern meat laboratory. The laboratory is equipped with the only pelt puller in a research laboratory in the U.S., four carcass coolers, a processed meats cooler, and coolers for offal, fat, and bone. Cutting rooms and a processed meat room containing a mechanical deboner, stuffers, grinders (one capable of grinding whole carcasses), injectors, choppers, and a vacuum tumbler are also available. The facility includes four freezers. For more information about the UW Meat Lab, click here.

Animal Science/Molecular Biology

Sheep in Pen

The wool research facilities include the only university commercial wool scouring train in the country. In addition, carding, blending, and combing equipment are also present. The wool facilities are equipped to provide measurements of wool fiber diameter, and they include a fiber image analyzer. Other measurements include clean wool yield (both individual fleece measurement and large lots), color, fiber length, and fiber strength. Image analysis technology for measuring skin parameters is also present.

Research laboratories specializing in lipid, protein, growth, and food microbiology abattoir and contain the following equipment: Gas chromatograph, scintillation counter, centrifuges, microfuges, gel electrophoresis apparatus for protein, DU-20 spectrophotometer, sterile hood and incubator, water baths, pH meters, freeze dryers, vacuum pumps, refrigerators, mixer homogenizers, slab dryer, fluorescence spectrophotometer, calorimeter, balances, and tissumizers.

The Department of Animal Science maintains a 1700 square feet reproductive biology laboratory with three small (300 square feet) adjacent laboratories equipped for cell culture, histology, and sample extraction and preparation. The cell culture room is equipped with a laminar-flow hood and a CO2 incubator (Flow Labs #1500). In addition, equipment necessary for modern molecular biology procedures has been provided.

Fet Lab

Major items of equipment in the reproductive biology laboratory include: sterile hood and incubator for cell culture, LKB laser densitometer, power supplies and gel electrophoresis apparatus for protein and DNA or RNA gels, Brinkman microfuges, water baths, pH meter, conductance meter, balances, vacuum pumps, refrigerators, freezers, etc. Centrifuges include a Sorval RC2B and Beckman J-21B, Beckman L8-70 and L5-75. A Beckman liquid scintillation counter (LS-7500) and an absorbance spectrophotometer are also available.

The Department also offers a computer lab, a study area and access to the internet and department software on a student PC in the main office, all located in the Animal Science/Molecular Biology Building.
