Research Data Storage

As research among all disciplines is increasingly data intensive, ARCC has made research data storage a core service. This core service is currently being performed by the petaLibrary, allowing for research data to be safely and securely stored and shared. Using the petaLibrary, researchers may reliably store and exchange data with anyone located anywhere in the world through various tools. Additionally, the petaLibrary provides storage for publishing research data. No matter the use case, researchers have peace of mind that their research data is compliant to funder requirements, protected, and accessible whenever and wherever they are.

petaLibrary Overview

For convenience and organization, the petaLibrary is split into two distinct areas. The first area, Data Commons, is for data being utilized in active research projects. This is the primary storage location where most research data is contained. The second area, Data Curation, is for data used in published research. This area is home to data that will no longer be manipulated and/or is not being used in any active research projects. To provide users with a seamless computing experience, the petaLibrary is connected to the UWyo network for blazing-fast transfer speeds starting at 40 Gbps, upgradeable to 80 Gbps. The UWyo network is connected to a specialized research network at speeds of 100 Gbps to allow for high-volume bulk data transfer, remote experiment control, and data visualization. For more information about this specialized network, visit the DMZ Wiki Page. This service was built from the ground up to provide UWyo researchers with these world-class speeds for research data sharing and hosting. Further details are available at the petaLibrary Wiki Page.

petaLibrary Data Commons

The Data Commons area is the primary storage area on petaLibrary. It is a highly collaborative space geared towards project-oriented data storage for use with multiple researchers at UWyo and beyond. To provide enhanced collaboration and control, Principal Investigators may assign access permissions to other UWyo users as well as external users.

petaLibrary Data Curation

The Data Curation area is another storage area on petaLibrary, further split into two sub-areas. The first sub-area is called Publications. This is a space for storing and presenting research materials, data, and documentation on the Internet. All data stored here is publicly available for download, and cannot be changed once published. There is no charge for any data stored in Publications as long as it meets UWyo publication criteria. The second sub-area is called Archive. This space is called “cold storage”, meaning it contains not-published data that is no longer part of an active research project, but is still valuable to the research community. Data stored in Archive may not be modified, but may be retrieved or transferred to Data Commons for modifications.

Citing the petaLibrary

A requirement of all allocations and use of computing resources managed by ARCC, including the petaLibrary, is to acknowledge ARCC support for your research. Our ability to identify supported scientific results helps ensure continued support from the State of Wyoming, federal agencies, and other sources for future HPC/HPS systems. Acknowledgement Policy

For Projects on the petaLibrary

We request that you cite your use of the petaLibrary system with the following citation format, based on the source of your allocation and modified as needed to conform with citation style guidelines.
