Course Requirements for Art Majors

 Bachelor's in Art

  • C or better in all art classes
  • 2.5 in art major program
  • 2.5 overall GPA

In addition to the university and college requirements, all students majoring in art must complete the following:

 

Foundations Core

ART 1110 Foundations 2D

ART 1120 Foundations 3D

ART 1130 Foundations Color

ART 1115 Digital Media

ART 2000 Portfolio Review

ART 2305 Techniques

 

Art History Core

ART 2010 Survey I

ART 2020 Survey II

BA - Art History core plus 1 additional course @ 3000/4000 level

BFA - Art History core plus 3 additional courses @ 2000/4000 level

*** Prerequisites for ART 2010 & 2020 -  (choose one) HIST 1110, HIST 1120, HIST 1130, ANTH 1200, ANTH 1300, ANTH 1450, THEA 1000, MUSC 1000, RELI 1000, HP 1120, HP 1151; or ARE 3030; and complete a WA course. ***Art History prerequisites should be taken freshman year

Art History Concentration Requirements

Language requirement:

12 hours of a single foreign language

Studio Core (freshmen year) 6 hours from the following:

ART 1005 Drawing I

ART 1110 Foundations 2D

ART 1120 Foundations 3D

ART 1130 Foundations Color

Humanities course/writing course (freshmen year):

Choose from 1 of the following, PLUS a WA course:

HIST 1110, HIST 1120, HIST 1130, ANTH 1200, ANTH 1300, ANTH 1450, THEA 1000, MUSC 1000, RELI 1000, HP 1120, HP 1151 or ARE 3030

Art History Core (sophomore year):

ART 2010 Survey I (Ancient through Medieval Art) FALL

ART 2020 Survey II (Renaissance through Contemporary Art) SPRING

Studio Core (sophomore year):

ART 1310 Introduction to Sculpture or ART 2005 Drawing II or ART 2210 Painting I or  ART 2350 Metalsmithing I or ART 2410 Ceramics I or ART 2420 Ceramics II or ART 2430 Combined Clay Methods

Other Traditions:

ART 2730 African Creativity and Ritual or

ART 2720 Introduction to the Classical ART and Culture of Islam

 

Complete 12 upper-division hours in art history courses from at least 3 of the following periods:

Ancient, Medieval, Renaissance, Baroque to 19th century, Modern (20th c.), and Contemporary

 

Art History concentration internship:

ART 4400 Internship (3 hours)

Additional upper-division art history/studio credits:

9 hours of electives in art history and/or studio
