Department Welcome Back Picnic

At the start of each academic year, the Department of Visual and Literary Art hosts a Welcome Back Picnic for new and returning students to connect or reconnect with other students and faculty.  The Picnic is a wonderful way for students to establish relationships with their peers and learn about student groups and other upcoming events in the department.

Members of the faculty conduct on the spot portfolio reviews and accept scholarship applications from eligible high school students. Art Organization Events

Croquis

The term "Croquis" is a French term meaning "sketch".  It is often used to describe short quick drawings done from a live model. The Croquis sessions at the University of Wyoming are run by students in Student Art League and usually meet once a week in Room 250 of the new Visual Arts Building.  The sessions allow for both long and short poses and offer students a time outside of class to work from a live nude model. Current meeting times and costs are: Wednesdays from 7 - 9 p.m. VA 250 Attendance is free, but donations are suggested and highly appreciated! For more information please Contact: Shelby Shadwell at sshadwel@uwyo.edu

Ceramic Art Guild Silent Benefit Auction

Annual Iron Pour

An all day affair after the Sculpture Society works for weeks to prepare, our UW students come together in early fall of every school year to recycle donated materials so that they may create art. In 2004, after one year of teaching at UW, Assistant Professor Ashley Hope Carlisle built an iron casting furnace so she could teach the students how to make varying scale sculpture utilizing scrap iron with a little elbow grease and a team mindset so they can accomplish a set goal- to make art as communication with the world around them.Citizens all over Laramie have given the art department scrap to recycle, and Pacific States Pipe in Provo, Utah donates the fuel, so all that is left is to create molds and work together to turn the rusty gifts into 2700 degree molten metal.Schools from all over the region come to UW to pour iron with our students, which offers great connections, and really fosters working together to accomplish a great deal. The Public is welcome to come and view the process, and is invited to partake in the fun by creating a tile in iron while contributing to funding students in traveling to conferences, and exhibition opportunities. For more information please Contact: Ashley Hope Carlisle ahc1@uwyo.edu
