Kathleen Frye is an artist and educator who has worked with students of all ages in a variety of settings that include Colorado, New York City, Bali Indonesia and now in Laramie, Wyoming. Her areas of focus in Art Education include interdisciplinary connections among the arts and between the visual arts and other disciplines, non-western art as a focus in arts learning, experiential arts learning in museum settings, and developing community-based art programs.
Kathleen’s creative work is a way to bring meaning to the complexity of the visual world, with a focus on two areas of interest. The first involves the spatial complexity and meaning of calligraphic, gestural marks. She is interested in the layering of marks, their edges, the movement and rhythm of marks, and the resulting spatial relationships that resonate as light and subject. Her second area of interest is the landscape -- views of ordinary landscape elements in places that have significance for her. She seeks to simplify the visual complexity of landscape forms while still evoking a sense of place. Her creative practice is sustained by an ongoing exploration of art making processes: the manipulation of materials; the activities of seeing, thinking and making; and engaging with images as they unfold on paper, canvas, and metal plates.
Kathleen Frye is an assistant professor and coordinator of the Art Education program at the University of Wyoming. In her previous appointment as a lecturer and coordinator for the Art Education program at SIU Carbondale, she was awarded grants to develop community-based art initiatives and founded summer and after-school art programs for K-12 students. She has an MFA in printmaking from Colorado State University, a BFA from the University of Colorado at Denver, and an MA (K-12 Art Education) from the City College of New York. She holds a NY State teaching certificate for K-12 Art.
