Frequently Asked Questions

University of Wyoming Art Museum

What is the cost of admission?
The UW Art Museum always has free admission.

Do I have to pay to park at the Art Museum?
No, the parking lot at the Centennial Complex is free. However, the lot is monitored, so be sure to sign in at the vehicle registry book just inside the front entrance in order to avoid receiving a parking ticket.

What’s the difference between the Art Museum and the American Heritage Center?
While both share the same building, the Centennial Complex, they are quite different. The American Heritage Center (AHC) is an archive and research facility, and is a separate entity from the Art Museum. The Art Museum collects only fine art objects and artifacts, with a primary focus on exhibitions, including contemporary art.

Can I take pictures of the artwork in the gallery?
Photography in the galleries will be allowed on portable handheld devices only. Photography intended for reproduction will be permitted by the lender for purposes of promotion and / or publishing in conjunction with the exhibition only.

How does the cell phone audio tour work?
For select exhibitions, a free audio tour is available to museum visitors through their cell phone. Usually recorded by either a curator or an artist, the tours provide additional information about the works on view. The tour is accessed by dialing a phone number from your cell phone. Each work of art has a number assigned to it that when entered into your phone will start the audio clip. Handouts are available online as well, so you can listen to the audio tour even if you aren’t at the museum. The flexibility of using your cell phone allows you to listen to all, some, or none of the information and in no particular order.

I want to attend one of the Art Talks at the Art Museum. Do I need a ticket?
The majority of public programs hosted by the Art Museum are free and you don’t need a ticket, you can simply show up. Our opening receptions, held in the spring, summer, and fall, are also free and open to the public.

I have a painting and would like to know what it’s worth. How can I find out?
The UW Art Museum cannot provide appraisals, however, we do maintain a list of regional appraisers that we can share with you. Please contact Exhibitions Coordinator, Kayle Avery for a copy.

am an artist and would like to exhibit my artwork in the Art Museum. How do I submit a proposal?
The Art Museum Exhibitions Review Committee meets quarterly to review all exhibition proposals that are received. Details about what to include in your proposal can be found on our website.

Can I rent the Art Museum for an event?
As a research and educational facility, the UW Art Museum does not have an events staff. Certain public areas are available for use depending on the space availability, type of event, and director approval. We do not permit weddings or wedding receptions to be held in the Centennial Complex or on the building’s grounds. For more information about whether the Art Museum is the right venue for your event, please contact Exhibitions Coordinator, Kayle Avery.

I’d like to donate a painting to the Art Museum. Can I drop it off?
Since we are unable to accept or hold any artwork prior to Collections Advisory Committee approval, please do not drop off or send any original artwork.  Instead, submit an image of the object and a close-up image of any signatures with all pertinent information.  More information is available here on our website. As much as we would love to accept all donations, not all gifts fit within our scope and mission, and the Art Museum and the University of Wyoming have the right to refuse gifts or bequests.

How do I find out what artists the Art Museum has in its collection?
We are currently working on digitizing the collection and making it available to the public online. In the meantime, please fill out a research request form and email it to Curator of Collections, Nicole Crawford. Please allow two weeks to receive a response.

Can I view artwork from the permanent collection that isn’t on view?
If you’re doing research, please fill out a research request form and email it to Curator of Collections, Nicole Crawford. Please allow two weeks to receive a response. The more detail you can provide on the research request form, the better we can respond to your inquiry.

Where can I learn more about a particular artist or type of art?
We suggest you start with a simple online search or at your local library. After that, you can also fill out a research request form and email it to Exhibitions Coordinator, Kayle Avery. We may be able to provide additional tips and suggestions for fine art research.

May I talk to a curator?
Curators are often traveling or heavily scheduled, so an appointment is absolutely necessary. When making an appointment, it is important to state the reason for your call.  In many cases, questions can be answered with a little research on your part, or somewhere on our website. You can also send an email to the front desk (uwartmus@uwyo.edu) and they can forward your message to the appropriate staff member.
