Teacher Leader Institute 2019-2020

June 25-27, 2019 and Summer 2020 with distance learning throughout year

Northern Arapaho artist and recent recipient of the Wyoming Governor's Arts Award, Robert Martinez, gives an airbrush demonstration to the 2019-20 Teacher Leader Institute summer intensive educator cohort (summer 2019).
Steven Heil, high school art educator from Buffalo, WY presents via ZOOM, a print he created during the virtual intensive.

Educators from across Wyoming just completed a year long Teacher Leader Institute pilot program designed by the Museum Education team. This year-long experience began in summer 2019 with an in-person intensive that offered a mix of hands-on art making, and deep exploration of museum and arts learning. Over the year, the cohort met monthly via ZOOM to discuss and apply the theories and methods directly in their classrooms. Many teachers were impressed at the abilities of their students and the depth of discussions that happened through practicing the inquiry model and deep looking techniques used within the museum.

Like many programs across the country, the Teacher Leader Institute had to quickly change plans due to health and safety concerns related to COVID-19. While another in person intensive was scheduled for this summer, the group ultimately met via ZOOM over the course of a month for bi-weekly lectures, updates and check ins that included an artist talk by printmaker Mark Ritchie, a deep dive and discussion about William Kentridge (whose exhibition is currently rescheduled for spring 2021 in our galleries), an advocacy and leadership panel with national, state and local experts, and artistic practice to hone their own skills. The cohort completed a print exchange with the theme of transformation. One print from each participant, including works by the museum educators and artist Mark Ritchie, will become part of the Art Museum's teaching collection. Look for a sneak peak of the exchange in the coming weeks. If you know an educator interested in using the arts in their classroom, or who wants to develop leadership skills, alongside a network of like-minded colleagues, please tell them to consider a future Teacher Leader Institute. The next cohort will start in summer 2021.
