The exhibition Material Traditions displays objects from the collection to trace the common thread from traditional textiles to the conceptual work of contemporary artists found in the exhibition Material Slip. All featured objects are a part of the global material tradition, rooted in prehistoric times. Each object contains a story, communicated through symbols, styles, materials, and use. These elements vary across cultures, but the necessity of cloth is woven into the fabric of daily life across the globe. In this exhibition, view 22 textile artworks from across cultures that call the viewer to perceive textiles differently and consider the Western gendered expectations of “women’s work.”
