The UW Art Museum brings together for the first time, paintings by two prolific artists: Harold Garde and Ron Kroutel. Both paint on a large scale and approach their work similarly as problems to be solved or questions to be answered, though their styles and methods are quite distinctive.
Kroutel and Garde’s paintings entice the viewer to look more closely, to question the details and uncover what is being presented. Kroutel’s works invite us to imagine a narrative through close inspection of detail, while Garde’s present imagery that encourages introspection. This pairing of sizeable paintings elicits a strong emotional response through familiar subjects like people, objects, and landscapes, presented in novel ways. There is something disquieting about the composition of these images. Something’s off. This thought-provoking exhibition is rife with art historical references, pioneering technique, and artistic mastery developed over lengthy careers.
Visit the Art Museum to experience these nine striking paintings in person.
