Last year, the UW Art Museum received a collection of 72 works on paper that offers a compelling range of print media, artistic styles, and genres. Dating from the 17th - 20th centuries, this exhibition is the first public viewing drawn from this collection.
In 2004, the University of Wyoming Art Museum was fortunate to receive a gift of seventy-two works on paper from A. Rex Rivolo. Assembled more than 26 years ago, the collection is comprised of works from the 17th to 20th Centuries. The Rivolo collection is compelling in its breadth of exemplary printmaking techniques, even if executed by many artists unknown to the general public. The collection includes prints primarily by European and American artists and mirrors as well as enhances, the geographic scope of the Art Museum's collection.
Selections from the A. Rex Rivolo Collection of Works on Paper offers exquisite examples of printmaking techniques, including engraving, etching, and drypoint to lithography, serigraphy, and wood cut. With the exception of the serigraphs (known also as silk screen printing), each of these images was created on a plate of some kind—copper, steel, wood, or stone—it is interesting to consider that they were all made in reverse. The process of printmaking begins with drawing an image on one of these materials. It is then transferred to the paper through the pressure of a printing press. The result is that ink is transferred to the paper in reverse, a mirror image of the original. For images that include the artist's signature, such as (title) by Fritz Rohrs, the artist would have written his signature backwards in order for it to appear correctly in the final print. Grouped loosely by genre, subjects range from portraiture to landscape and illustration to expressionistic interpretations.
