Oct. 25, 2007 -- The University of Wyoming Art Museum's series on Antarctica will culminate Monday, Oct. 29, with a lecture from Guy Guthridge and special pre-release screening of Werner Herzog's latest film.

At 7 p.m. at the UW Art Museum, Guthridge, former director of the National Science Foundation's Antarctic Artists and Writers Program, will present “Antarctica: Artists, Writers, and the ‘Continent for Science.’”

For 50 years, the Antarctic Artists and Writers Program has sent artists, writers, and scholars to Antarctica to research and create their work and to help document America's Antarctic heritage.

At 9 p.m., Herzog will present a free screening of his new documentary “Encounters at the End of the World,” which has not yet been released publicly. Herzog's film examines the lives of the 1,000 men and women who live together in Antarctica under unbelievably close quarters, risking their lives in search of cutting-edge science.

The “Antarctica” series of programs have been funded by an anonymous sponsor with additional funding from the FMC Corporation, ExxonMobile, the National Advisory Board of the UW Art Museum and the Wyoming Arts Council.

The Art Museum is located in the Centennial Complex at 22nd and Willett Drive in Laramie. The museum is open 10 a.m.-9 p.m. Mondays, and 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Tuesdays through Saturdays. Admission is free. For more information, call (307) 766-6622 or visit www.uwyo.edu/artmuseum.
