Gwinavere Johnston -- 2001 Outstanding Alumna

Gwinavere Johnston is recognized nationally as a pacesetter in the public relations counseling industry. In 1966, Johnston received a B.S. in journalism. Now having more than 30 years of experience, Johnston founded her own company, Johnston Wells, at age 28. Today, Johnston Wells is the largest public relations firm in the Rocky Mountain Region.
Johnston counsels clients from telecommunications, the health care industry, resort and travel agencies, and financial institutions. She also provides public relations guidance and assistance to several nonprofit organizations on a pro-bono basis each year. Johnston Wells emphasizes strategic planning, crisis and issues communications, and community relations programs. Considered one of the best workplace cultures in the industry, Johnston Wells also is known as a highly creative agency.
Recognized as a leader both professionally and personally, Johnston has received numerous awards, including the Public Relations Society of America Colorado Chapter’s Lifetime Achievement Award, the Women in Communication’s Women of Achievement Award, the Colorado Women’s Chamber of Commerce Athena Award, and the 2000 Outstanding Woman in Business in Denver award from the Denver Business Journal.
Johnston holds memberships in the Public Relations Society of America (PRSA), College of Fellows, Colorado Women’s Forum, and the Rotary club of Denver. She is a board member of the Colorado Judicial Institute, Lower Downtown Denver, Inc., the Spring Institute, Institute of International Education, Colorado Outward Bound; and she is chair of Denver’s Two Percent Club. She also is a member of the UW College of Arts and Sciences Board of Visitors and was recently appointed to the UW Foundation Board of Directors.
