Chad C. Deaton -- 2009 Outstanding Alumnus
Bachelor of Science 1976 Geology
Byron, Wyoming, native Chad C. Deaton is president, executive chairman, and chairman of the executive committee of Baker Hughes, Incorporated, a Fortune 500 company and the third largest oil field service company in the world. With operations in more than 90 countries, Baker Hughes provides advanced products and services to help customers drill, evaluate, complete, and produce oil and gas wells.
After earning a bachelor’s degree, Deaton spent the next eight years working as a field engineer with the Dowell Division of the Dow Chemical Company. He worked for Schlumberger Oil field Services after the company acquired the oil field services division from Dow in 1984, and this position took him to Schlumberger locations across Europe, Russia, and the United States. In 2004, Deaton took his current position with Baker Hughes.
Besides his contributions to the success of the energy industry around the world, Deaton has been deeply involved with making a positive difference in the lives of young people. Under his leadership, Baker Hughes became among the largest supporters of Junior Achievement, a privately funded, non-profit organization that uses hands-on, real-world experiences to teach young people the economics of life.
Deaton is a board member, donor, and strategic planner for Houston Achievement Place (HAP), a non-profit social service agency. “Chad cares,” says HAP Executive Director Paul Gilford. “It is a rare person and executive who can lose himself in a story about a child in between international conference calls.”
