Rex L. Dolan
Bachelor of Science - Zoology - 1973
Rex Dolan will never forget the look on Dr. Bob Atherton's face when his mentor discovered that Dolan had burned a hole in Atherton's new sport coat sleeve while working with sulfuric acid. Despite this, Dolan says, "My fondness for Dr. Atherton and my friendship with him have remained strong for over twenty years."
After earning his UW bachelor's degree with honors, Dolan completed his training in dentistry in 1977 at Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, Ohio. From 1977 through 1981, he served in the Army Dental Corps, then became a clinical instructor of oral surgery at Case Western's School of Dentistry. He established a successful practice in Phoenix, but moved back to his hometown, Cheyenne. In 1985, he opened the Cheyenne Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Associates with Dr. James Garel. He was board certified by the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery in 1988. Dolan is known as a caring professional who attends to the needs of the patient as a whole person. "He goes the extra mile, and then some," said a colleague. One example, among many: In 1990, he performed surgery on a high school student, who later expressed interest in his work. Dolan took her under his wing, and she is now at UW planning a career in oral surgery. She is but one of the many people Dolan has helped and mentored. Dolan has held several positions in the local Dental Society and was 1991-92 President of Wyoming's Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Society. He has been both an alternate delegate and delegate to the American Association of Oral and Maxi11ahcial Surgeons. He has been a member of the Wyoming Cleft Palate Team since 1991. His peers in the Southeast Wyoming Dental Society have elected him to the Board of Directors of the Delta Dental Plan of Wyoming
