Janice Hubbard Harris

Outstanding Former Faculty Member 2014

Department of English

Janice Harris joined the faculty of the Department of English in 1975. She received a B.A. at Stanford University (Phi Beta Kappa) and a Ph.D. from Brown University. She was one of the first advisors to Gays and Lesbians of Wyoming (GLOW) and was among the founding mothers of the College of Arts and Sciences Women's Studies program. She went on to serve as director of Women's Studies and the UW Honors Program and as chair of the Department of English. Nationally recognized for her publications in modern British literature, Janice developed courses in women's writing, post-colonial studies, and Japanese literature. At the heart of her research and teaching were an unflagging curiosity and commitment to insights gained through study of the arts and humanities. She began many a class project with Einstein's maxim: "Make things as simple as possible, but no simpler."
